Whats Better for Gaming/Home use???

Hey guys.. I am thinking of doing a trade.. My computer for a dif computer...

Here is my system Specs.

-Amd athlon xp @ 1.67 (Stock)
-Biostar M7VIG,
-512meg Corsair Pc133 (in dual 256)
-1x40gig 2meg cache WD (No raid.),
-SBAudigy 5.1 ,

Thats my system specs for what i am trading.

And this is what i am thinking of getting

- p4 1.4 (socket 423 with retail HSF)
- dvd drive 16x
- 40gb WD 5400rpm
- abit th7-raid (has onboard sound)
- 128x4mb pc800 RDRAM
- Linksys 10/100 nic
- SB Live

If anyone here can help me. Think About what computer is better For Gaming/Home use.

I am mostly use it for Counter-strike Gaming and such game's and so on.

I am looking for a computer that is ok.

On That p4 I can OC it to 1.6 easy no problem.. I might OC it even more cause my case has better cooling.

So Take your time and give me your Opinioin on what comp is good.

Is it regular SDRAM or DDR?
WD harddrive (40GB) a 7200 RPM model?

On my setup

SDRam
and 5400 RPM hd..

Not sure about other setup..

I do know other setup has RDram..

I am thinking its a 5400 also.

keep youtr athlon. the socket 423 P4's are a dead end technology.

SDRAM is a major hit in preformance. The RDRAM would be a little better. If both are 5400 then the HD is shouldn't be a deciding factor.

The TH7-RAID is a RDRAM board, you're upgrade path would be limited because of Intel changing sockets. With the XP setup you could easily just add new DDR mem (which is kinda cheap) and have some better preformance. You're board looks to support both DDR and SDRAM which is a bonus. You can't mix em though. The Biostar board looks like a better deal to me. Awesome 6 channel sound chipset onboard of it, compared to AC97 on the TH7-RAID, plus it has USB 2, and onboard LAN.

My final opinion on this matter (sound like a judge

) would be to keep your setup and not do the trade, save up some money and get some DDR memory.

I am thinking of getting a new cheap mobo/ddram/chip

Money is limited..

I agree. Keep your current setup. Your Athlon has more performance and there is still room to upgrade whereas the Socket 423 P4 is dead. Also it would be a lot cheaper to go with some DDR Memory rather than upgrade the RDRAM later on down the road if you feel the need to add more memory.

Stay with the Athlon most def. you would be pretty much done with the p4 like the others said.

DDR and SDR are not compatible with each other, they are a physically different shape. Keep the Athlon, it will beat any P4 under 2GHz.

you obviously didn't check out the info on his motherboard which supports both but not at once. And yes there are chipsets that do that. k thx

Anyway I know some mobo's Can use both DDR and SDRAM..

MY mobo BioStar M7VIG can support SD And DDR.. Right now it is useing SDRAM...

I know enough about computers to make it work....

I'd have to agree with the fact that you should stick with your AMD setup.

Just looking at the processors...you're 1.67 GHz is a HELL of a LOT faster than the P4 AND it Folds at Home a TON faster also. The RDRam is still expensive, and I say it isn't worth it.
