cooling for pentium 200mHz

Post by wpublic »

i have the above CPU in this system, it is just a ceramic chip with no metal on the upside. i booted it up for the first time today for a few minutes, it ran fine, and after i shut it down, i touched it and it was pretty durn hot.

i think i read somewhere any intel under 500mHz can be run either naked or with some passive cooling. of course, i may be wrong.

i was just wondering if i can run this thing naked as like a server or whatnot or should i put some passive/active cooling to it?

if i put a pretty powerful case fan blowing out the rear, would this suffice?

i was thinking about fitting a small heatsink with a chipset fan and a rear case fan.

I'd get a passive HS

I've got a P200MMX ocd to 225 (big deal) lol. And I threw a Stock HSF for a XP1800+ on it just to be funny.. But it originally had a very low profile hs w/a 60mm fan on it.. The cooler they run, the longer they last.. GL eGo

this board, (i think) biostar mb8500-tvg, when i came across it, this chip was in it sitting naked with no signs of any cooling system applied directly to the cpu. i have a 60mm HS and fan, i just don't see any cpu fan connectors, mind that this is already installed in an at case and i can't at this time see the upper left of the board. i will have to go look at the manuals again...

i need to find the jp13 on this board, the "manuals" i have are only text and have no mention of a jp13

The SLK900u is suppose to be THE best! :D

Oh, wait, we're talkin bout a P200.. :p

I took the heatsink off of a P60 and put it on my P150 oced to 175. I also put two little 40mm fans on it for fun. Seems to run pretty cool that way. :)

right now i am running it with a lo-pro hs done up with some arctic silver. seems ok for now. before i close the case, i think i am gonna have to put in a rear case fan, but the way these AT cases are built, i am not sure how much airflow i am gonna get.

ALL Pentiums MUST have a HSF!

Most 486 CPUs also (but a few slow ones don't).

Any old socket 7 HSF will work just fine. Also any FCPGA or SOCKET A HSF will fit.

it needs minor active cooling...or you can put one of the NEWER huge passive coolers on it as long as the case has some air flow.

I don't know how you ran a socket cpu without ANY heatsink, but DON'T. My P1 133MHz will run with just a heatsink, but will crash in summers. there is no way you could run a 500MHz CPU without any cooling, that is a myth. If you wanted overkill, get one of the SK6+'s from SVC for $10, assuming P2 is socket 370. You won't have to worry about anything with that.
