I was looking forward to this game for a while, but now that I've read a lot of reports on newgroups, it doesn't sound like much fun. I hear it's plagued with pugs and LOTS of lag.
I realize the game is new, but I'm having a hard enough time trying to convince myself to pay MONTHLY for ANY game, much less a buggy one.
Looking for opinions....

I played the beta for a bit, I didn't play it very long so I may not be the best person to give an opinion, but I didn't find it all that fun. Too much waiting and wandering instead of action. It's worse than BF1942 or Tribes 2 when it comes to the action vs. "planning" aspect of it. Maybe I didn't give it enough time, but it just didn't seem like my thing...

a buddy at work lives by this game...he says it's the best online game he has played yet. he has never mentioned lag or anything...and he uses the chat feature (voice) all the time.
i don't like the idea of paying a monthly fee though...
sounds like he's on the road to evercrack... lol
but seriously, Sony's multiplayer games imo have gone downhill. It's gonna take a killer game to make me pay them for it again.
Not the game itself thats bad, but the customer service. blegh

I played the beta as well and liked it for the most part. it was buggy and alot of stuff still didnt work, even right up to the end of the beta. gameplay was good, felt very much like tribes but way more detailed. I dont get into shooters where there is constantly heated fighting going on like a quake or unreal tournament type of game. I appreciate a slower paced more thought out type of shooter and this game is definitely like that. I think I played it for about a week before even getting into a fight. weapons were a little lame and explosions were pretty wimpy. when my system wasnt CTD, I could get in battles with 100+ peeps and that was cool. graphics were pretty nice and the music was even good. reminded me alot of the music in tribes 1.
the only real question I have about this one is its long-term playability. its a shooter and theres nothing else to do in the game except battle for bases. as a pay-for-play, I just dont see anyone playing this for more than a couple of months before they get tired of it. I just dont think anyone is gonna pay monthly for a shooter when there are so many out there that are free, even if it has some rpg elements (although nothing too fancy).

It rules
I've been playing planetside for just over a month now. I really enjoy it. It isn't like other MMORPG games because you really don't have to deal with money or equipment. All you really maintain are your certifications for weapons and vehicles, which are pretty flexible.
It isn't the best game in the world, but it really is alot of fun waging war in battles of hundreds. I thought BF1942 was cool in 20x20... this is literally hundreds on hundreds at times...
Anyhow... its probably not for everyone. The game takes quite a machine to run without lag (I have a 2 GHz with 1 Gig mem and a Radeon 9500 Pro) and it only stopped lagging because I upgraded from 512 Meg to 1 gig system mem.
Game play also varies depending on what faction/role/server you decide to set up with.
If you know a friend who plays, ask to borrow their 7-day "friend" key which is included in the game and give it a try. Or if you have a fileplanet.com susbcription, you can download the game and try it 7 days free.
Also, the game is always improving. There are tons of plans to enhance it with different vehicles and strategic changes. its sort of fun to know it is always evolving.
