How many drives can you run at once using the various connections?

Don't know what happened about that double post????
Sorry,

Is this the one to go for if I decide to get the asus?
Asus Motherboard for AMD Athlon XP/Duron Processors, Model# A7N8X Deluxe Retail

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.a ... 14&order=1

The newegg discription says 400fsb and also up to 3200xp, but detailed specs show 333fsb as the highest. Not gonna get a 400fsb cpu now, but latter I might want one. Like when the 600fsb comes out and the 400's drop to $100 :)

Thanks

So far, I like it. :)

I haven't tried the sound so can't say how that is. I got it refurb and no accessories came with it including no gameport adapter so I'm using my fortissmo III. Others have said the onboard sound is darn good.

I use a 8500, no problems yet. No conflicts that I can tell so far. I do get some weird stutter and hesitation when using ie bookmarks sometimes. But that could be because the bookmarks were saved from a partially corrupted hard drive.

This one is the non deluxe, so no raid. I have 2 hard drives and a dvd drive and cdrw. At default voltage now 11.5x190. :)

You do want ver. 2.0, which is what I have. It is 400 compatable. The ones you linked to are the newer versions. When it says barton compatable and 400, that's the newer one. ;)

The detail specs are probably just not updated and for the earlier version.

This is while folding and just after running 3dmark2001:

Using an antec trueblue 480. The rails are lower on the nforce than they were on my gigabyte.

the deluxe is the nicest barton board ive seen yet, and since its a good overclocker that just ices the cake since ASUS makes damn stable boards

I think I will pop for the deluxe board soon, since this will be the last one I plan to buy for myself for awhile then.

Now if I can use sata drives on it, should I? Never tried one. Is a 7200 rpm sata supposed to be much better than a 7200 rpm IDE?

I have seen some really nutty looking prices for a little 36gig drive, but then saw big maxtor or WD for not alot more than close to the same size IDE drive.

For capturing and editing video would sata have any advantage?

WOW, blade! Those rails are nearly the same as the rails that I have on my 350w Enermax...

I'm thinking about getting a True 480. Man, if it won't make a difference, why bother? :D

Although, when I upgrade my video card, I'll need a newer PSU anyways, cause a 9700 Pro requires lots of power.

I still can't believe you're at 190x11.5 at default voltage... :p

Well, reading around the net some are getting much better rails using the true 480. I just wonder if they are accurate. Only way to be positive is to use a voltmeter. Which I don't have.

Been thinking of putting in the coolmax 550w to see if that shows any better. But I have so many cables, fans, fan controllers etc.. everywhere, it's a pain. :rollin

Booted at 11.5x200 at default too, seemed ok. But I am gunshy with my last hard drive corruption, so went back to 11.5x190.

hmmm, using a diff setting in mobo monitor brings this up:

It just isn't right.

get two SATA Drives, WD, 8MB Buffer, 10k RPM 36gig

Thats too high a price for too small a drive for me!

MAXTOR 80GB 7200RPM SATA HARD DRIVE MODEL # 6Y080MO - OEM $119

or

MAXTOR 120GB 7200RPM SATA HARD DRIVE MODEL # 6Y120MO - OEM
$189

Those would be more my size and price range if I went with S ATA. $1.50 per gig maybe, but never $3 per gig!! Both drives 8mb cache, 7,200rpm. I'd actually like to see the 120gig for $150 or less before I would buy that I think.

I keep seeing those smaller more expensive drives running 10k rpm, but isn't that 10k a heat problem waiting to happen? And I thought it was the data throughput of the SATA that was supposed to make it faster anyway. You can get 10k ide drives I think, at least they had them years ago.

Not getting down on ya of course, just my thoughts and opinions on them, which may not be correct. If not feel free to correct me :)
Gotta learn somewhere eh.

The 10k makes a big dif, you can only get 10k in SCSI and SATA, and well, yeah, they will get hotter, but if your system is cooled right it would be fine...

and the 36gig 10k drives are the best for performance ;)

Maybe it was Scii I was thinking of, I knew they had 10k drives, but I think/thought there were IDE 10k drives long ago, expensive and the heat was a problem causing them to crash often, I could be wrong, or maybe because there were lots of problems with the heat maybe they quit making them??
I could be wrong, maybe the people I am thinking of were running SCII cards and drives?? It was about 7-10 yrs ago!!

But still for me for now, I think I would pass on the 10k drives. 36gigs is too small for me for anything I would want the speed for. I think the 1700xp and 7200 ide drives are going pretty good with 512 and above ram.

So if I jump up to the Asus deluxe and a 2500xp or above at 333fsb, 1gig ram, and either keep my ATA133 7,200 drives or go 7,200 SATA I should be flying ya think?

My system is overclocked to a 2000xp, but still......

Those drives should be able to keep up with the rest of the system while rendering animations and editing videos, right? My biggest performance hogs!
Anything else I do I don't even need a system like I have now!

well, 2x36 in RAID0 isn't that small...

and that would just be your OS and install files, keep the rest of your stuff on a larger, slower drive ( MP3's, movies etc )

BUT if you dont want to go that rout, then yeah, any 7200 RPM drive with a 8MB buffer will do ya
