Disk Space

Post by Intel »

I have floppy disks which say 1.44MB on them, yet Windows shows that the capacity is 1.38MB.
My hard disk is supposed to be 40GB yet there is 38.1GB available. Why is there not the space there is supposed to be?

See, it's a conspiracy, the storage companies sell you 40gigs and deliver only 38gigs and they put the remaining 2gigs into their own pocket .... j/k :D

It's just that Explorer and the HDD companies calculate their sizes slightly differently. One uses 1024x1024x1024 bytes for 1 GB, the others use 1000x1000x1000 bytes to calculate 1 GB.

The HD companies generally use 1000x1000x1000 and Windows/DOS/whatever uses 1024x1024x1024. I think. HD companies use whatever makes the drive look bigger, Windows uses the opposite. It's all marketing!
