Ever lost data through not backing up?

I have to admit that at the moment I do not have a backup strategy. My computer is just over a year old and I have not had a serious problem with it. Perhaps you have lost data and wished you had done backups. Convince me that I should do it.

Yes, and it's not fun. I backup everything to my file server nightly and burn a weekly backup. Also critical files get uploaded to the laptop daily.
I recommend using a CD-R or DVD-R and NTI's BackupNow! software. Works like a tape backup program with scheduling, but supports CD-R and DVD-R.

No, I've never lost data thanks to not backing up, never have.
:;
See, I usually used my second hard drive for backups and never considered what if I lose both. The second one didn't die, but it had many files corrupted and therefore, lost data. In the end I did manage to get some data from the dead hard drive. But I was lucky.
I do back up some on cdr, just haven't done it in months. But, now I'll change my plan and do it more often on cdrs.
Main thing I need is my address book, emails, bookmarks and cookies (I like cookies).

I just put important things on my external drive. its better then doing nothing, but like others said, drives do die.

Yep. I was the treasurer of our high school student council a few years back, and kept all of our financial information, including our Quicken file and completed deposit forms, on our notebook computer. Thankfully, I had printed hard copies of all of our deposit forms, and kept all of our receipts and bank statements organized in a file, but neglected to back up our Quicken file. Sure enough, the notebook's hard drive failed one day. To make a long story short, endless hours of work were lost. Back up, dammit!
i lost all of my data once...self induced when i was a complete newb. i added a new hard drive to my rig and was in FDISK...didn't know at the time that windows partition drive letters don't always jive with what DOS says. hahahaha! ended up formating my existing partitions!
i used a data recovery program to pull the data off of the freshly deleted partitions (i think i even formatted it). it was actually frightening what the file recovery software pulled off of the drive. tons of stuff deleted months and months ago. hehe
lesson learned!
backups now are kind of a challenge...it's more of a "save the most important" because i have waaaay too much data now. 55GB+ of mp3's, dozens of ripped dvd movies, etc.

LOL I have one of these 40 gig DeathStar drives also, and it's still going strong. In September, it will be 2 years old.Originally posted by Sean

Yeah, I am just relying on the fact that my 40 gb deskstar has yet to die and will NEVER die.I know, I'm beginning to get a little nervous. I plan on burning some of my really important information soon, so if it does die, I'm not screwed over too bad.

one of my clients just lost the main hard drive for their pbx auditing computer... now they gotta drop a grand + to try and recover the stuff. that's what they get for being too cheap to buy the tape backup i recommended.
