new pc ordered <gasp>, not built!
banish me from PCA now...but my new Dell pc should arrive tomorrow! i decided to take the easy way out for my main rig and keep the other 2 as the tweaking/playing pc's.
stats:
p4 2.8Ghz w/ 800MHz fsb
256MB dual channel DDR (adding 512MB more of Crucial DDR)
radeon 9800
60GB HD
integrated 5.1 sound
4x dvd+r/rw
the mobo also has SATA connectors for later drive upgrades.
i went this route for simplicity and lack of time to scope out parts, build, etc. the price of the individual components costs almost as much as the pc would to begin with...so it was tough not to go with it. i plan on running benchmarks between this one and my current rig (xp @2800) and see how the old platform compares to the newer p4 w/ 800fsb.

doh
dell aint that bad. my cousin got a PC from them, and it was nicely wired inside
Before, just for shits and giggles. I emailed dell to see if when I ordered a PC, if it could be shipped to me in pieces so i can assemble it myself and if it would give me a price break
they told me no becuase "they would be responceable for injuries caused by the assembly process"

Gone for good. But never say never
Depending on which Dell, you can get a rather decent box. The only real debilitating issues is getting a Dell with a proprietary PSU or mobo, or one without an AGP slot (my wife's company bought her a 2.4 without an AGP slot, and onboard audio...uhg). The cheapest systems they sell won't be very good for today's games, and will be essentially obsolete in about 18 months with no way to bring them up to (what most nerdz consider) current standards.
So if you got something that works, can be easily upgraded and isn't proprietary, and you got a good deal, I say "good for you".
But I digress....BAN HIM!

2 x 128MB ...so 256MB out of the box and then i'm adding 2 x 256 more. you have to add the new dual-channel DDR in pairs. the mobo has a total of 4 slots.
total price after tax was $1100 (free shipping). just adding up the parts equals that, i believe (or more).
rough estimates (pricewatch, newegg, etc):
cpu: 280 (oem)
hsf: 20
case/ps: 100
hd: 80
ram: 150
dvd burner: 175
mobo: 120
radeon 9800: 350
rough estimates...and that's without shipping, etc.
