Need recommendations for a DVD player

Post by Slugbait »

...so I'm watching T2 on my Sony S360 this evening (which is advertised on the front as capable of playing VCD...but it doesn't, the POS...), and one of the twins has just put his finger thru the eyeball of the other twin, and the coffee hits the floor...and it does a freeze-frame.

So I look for my remote, thinking I rolled over the Pause button, but the remote is five feet away. I hit Play, Pause, etc...nothing.

Eject worked. So I do a quick swipe of the disc, thinking it just needs a little cleaning. It grinds. "NO DISC".

So I put in another DVD (grind). Then a CD (grind). Then another CD (grind). Then a DVD (grind). Then a CD cleaner (grind). Then a DVD again (grind).

"NO DISC", every time.

My new player must have an S-Video connector, component would also be nice (but not necessary). COAX connector is necessary, and optical is optional. It would be nice if it played both + and - R discs, but I believe + is going to win the "Beta/VHS War", so + drives would be preferable. Natch, MP3 would be nice, but not necessary.

Most of my HT is Sony, but considering my S360 wasn't as advertised and has now gone TU after less than 3 years, I am willing to entertain other manufacturers.

Any suggestions on specific makes/models? Thx.

I have 2 cheapo Apex DvD players. One's a model 1100, and the other I just bought for only $40 with a model number of 1500. I got this brand because it plays everything I throw at it. Since a good majority of my movies are SVCD, these players work great with every brand of CD media I use. I've also heard that they are gong to be coming out with one that can play Divx movies. My only complaint about the Apex is the remote control. In a simple word - it sucks.

Yesterday my cd player at work stopped on me... was listin' to metallica and it stopped thought someone stole my remote and was fucking with me until i seen it... wouldn't play any dics i put in it... pisses me off only 2 years old too... I've heard with some Sony's they will only play VCD's if they are on certain media... sometimes they'll only play on CDRW's. I have a Toshiba SD3750 i think. It plays everything but SVCD's. Has component, optical but no coax. I haven't seen a DVD player with coax but i'm sure they are out there.
