1.Onkyo's reciever model TX-DS787 [trust for it's price what you can do with it it's amazing. jusat look it up.]
$800-$1000 somwhere in that range
2. For speakers go Go polk there stuff in general is pretty good especailly there subwoofers. Also make sure you subwoofer is independenty powerd and at least 100 watts. but i would reccomed 140.
3.DVD PLAYERS Basically go to like Cirucut city and talk to them they have good one's. Do not skimp on these.
4. Unless he has a big screen buy one or the alternative a sony wega flat tv they rule.
5. Connetion cabels Do not skimp on these i swear these make the biggest diffrence in the world also use the best connection avalaible if s-video use that! if only rca jacks use those but please stay the heck away from rf cables!!! they suck. Trust me this is probally the biggest part in quality loss in a system do not get cheap cables.

For reciever, Yamaha, Denon, Sony ES and Harmon Kardon (HK if you don't want frills)... But I can't give ya any model #'s cause i've been outta the home theatre scene for a couple years now. For speakers, I always recommend Paradigm! Their Moniter series are SWEET and kickass quality for the $. Be sure to demo them before you make any purchasing decisions. Specially the PW2200 sub!

Another speaker brand to check is Nuance. (both are canadian too) ;) Just DON'T get suckered into buying the "brand name" speakers like sony, pioneer, kenwood, etc!

The system I want? here it is! The paradigm system...

Fronts: Moniter 3
Center: CC370
Surround: Mini-Moniter or ADP370 depending if you want dipole surrounds or not...
Sub: PS1200 or PW2200

Check their site for more info about systems. Click me for kickass speakers!

I already have the moniter 9's and they are badass speakers!!!!! I would have just gotton the moniter 3's, but i also listen to music and these speakers provided the low midbass I wanted! ;)
