theoretically you should be able to boot from the CD, do a "Repair" install and your setup should be intact.

Is it something to do with the chipset or the hard drive? I know when I setup my wife's pc with Win2k, I installed using the onboard IDE controller. I then installed a Promise card with drivers and turned off the pc. I then switched over the ribbon to the Promise card and had no problem with Win2k.

There's no doubt that XP handles mobo changes MUCH better than 2K. I've had mixed results with 2K, but XP has never failed even when going between radically different chipsets.

That's a nice plus, but since I only upgrade my mobo once a year (if that) and a clean install is really only one full day's work the way I have it organized now, it's not an attractive enough selling point.

that was because you installed the Promise drivers before you switched the drive over.

Doesn't make sense. From what I've been able to gather, if you write a driver for XP it's trivially easy to make sure it works on 2k. Most hardware drivers that I've used recently are usually labeled "For Windows 2000 and XP".

Now, I can see them dropping support for Win9x/ME. Matter of fact, I think nvidia's and ATi's latest products are no longer supported under 95/98/98SE already. Dropping ME support isn't that far off.

So it sounds like from what you gents have been saying if it's a new game or relatively new (not DOS), it should work with no problems on Win2k right?
