Don't be 'gay' about thought control
Before homo's came out of the closet, "gay" just meant happy. How did "gay" ever get associated with homos in the first place? :;
From dictionary.com:
gay ( P ) Pronunciation Key (g)
adj. gay·er, gay·est
Of, relating to, or having a sexual orientation to persons of the same sex.
Showing or characterized by cheerfulness and lighthearted excitement; merry.
Bright or lively, especially in color: a gay, sunny room.
Given to social pleasures.
Dissolute; licentious.
It all spells "lame" in my book. Especially a kid getting suspended over that word.
Yeah, who gave any of them a right to change the definition? And wtf is "them" anyway?For one generation, it meant happy.
For another, it meant homosexual.
And now it means bad.

I believe it was the gays themselves that started using the word, and maybe it was partially based on the flamers who always seemed so "happy and lively". I've worked with quite a few gay people (one company I worked at was primarily gay staffing), but never bothered to ask any of them.
Besides, I suppose it sounds better to say, "Mom, dad...I'm gay" instead of using negative-sounding words like "homo", "queer", "fudge-packer", etc...

The term "gay" as applied to sexual preference is purportedly derived from the movie "Bringing up Baby" with Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant. At one point in the movie, Cary Grant is forced to put on a woman's dressing gown after his clothes are destroyed when he falls into a pond.
While wearing the dressing gown, Katherine Hepburn's battleaxe of an aunt comes into the house and is confronted by Cary Grant in a frilly woman's frock. In response to her demand that he explain why he is dressed as he is, Cary Grant exclaims: "Because I've gone gay all of a sudden."
If you have never seen this movie, you should rent it. It was made before World War II, but it is still funny as hell.
