Hard Drives!! <

Post by Sean »

Ok, I need to choose a new hard drive. I'm tempted to hold out and wait for the Raptor to drop even more in price. The lowest is $155 shipped.

However, the 120gb WD 8mb cache drive is on sale at CompUSA for $100, after rebates and such. Those drives aren't so fast. I'm surprised, my 60GXP is still pretty fast. It should suit me fine for a while, but I need a drive where I can transfer all the files I have now, so I can sort thru them later. ;)

I wanted to get a Maxtor 8mb cache drive, but am sorta rethinking that idea. The 80gb Maxtor 8mb cache drive is on NewEgg for $99, but I could get a 120gb WD for $100.. But, I love speed. :)

So, lets get a discussion going, I'm sure it'll benefit everyone.

OK, sorry. I don't mean ata33 slow, just in terms of the fast drives out these days. StorageReview shows the Maxtor ahead of the WD. I'm just speculating I guess. ;)

from what i've seen there the maxtor's and the wd are back and forth in the benches... when it boils down to it... you won't notice a bit of difference in real world performance... i'd get the WD just cause its cheaper and more storage... but thats me... BB i think has the 80 gig maxtor 8meg for 80 this week after rebates...

I have in my file server a WD800JB and a WD120BB and i dont notice any difference in the 2. but thats just cause they are in a file server. I dont know how much better the 8 meg would do in a regular computer.

well.. wait i do notice a slight difference. my MP3 are on 8meg drive and it has less activify then when i play a mp3 from the 2 meg.

I have a maxtor 60 and WD 80, only reall thing I notice is the WD does not make as much noise.
Might be a speed diffence I could tell if I mirrored the two and ran tests, but I haven't and can't tell the difference myself.

The WD is an 8mb cache drive with a 3 year waurenty. Thats was my onlly reall reason to buy it over a Maxtor with 8mb cache. The maxtor was still just 1 yr waurrnety.

It's time to buy another drive for another system, haven't decided what to buy this time!
