Interesting article about Longhorn here - the next test version leaked on the web early.

While I agree it would be nice to have better and more intuitive ways of searching for files, the idea of a file system that evolved from an SQL database is rather disconcerting. I wonder how much of a resource and performance hog this bitch is going to be? Hope 50K RPM drives are standard by then - or maybe we'll finally have practical solid-state storage.
Frankly, if people bothered to learn how to use Window's file search utility more effectively, and used a little forsight in organizing their data initially, it wouldn't be a big issue. I would prefer to see putting the heavy computing into search tools and not bloating the file system.
"Microsoft also appears to be pushing forward with a task pane, or sidebar, that by default adorns about a ruler's width of the right-hand side of the display. Similar task panes, but with different options, are available in Office XP, Office 2003 Beta 2 and MSN 8."
I HATE sidebars. I turn them off in all MS apps.
We'll just have to wait and see how it works out. As long as they give you a "Classic Windows" desktop option, I'll be happy.
I look forward to Longhorn's new WinFS file system with great trepidation...
