If you just need a word processor, the Inspiron 1100 starts at $800.

However, the Inspiron 5100 has a superior CPU core, faster CPU clock speed, a CD-RW/DVD combo drive, 10 gigs more drive space, more RAM, the GPU doesn't share the system memory, the GPU is VASTLY superior (and this comes from someone who hates ATI) for $1069. No tax for most states when purchased thru Dell Home.

Me, I'm eyeing the 8500. Get me some of that wide-screen goodness...

Here's something kinda crappy that will just as easily fit your budget...a Sotec at Best Buy, which has a CPU that is almost half as fast than the Inspiron 1100, the display is 2" smaller, the hard drive is 10 gigs smaller, the GPU is inferior (both chipset and AGP speed), and you don't get the WordPerfect suite, but the GPU memory is dedicated at 32 megs, and it has a CD-RW/DVD drive. It only costs a hundred dollars more (+tax) than the Inspiron 1100, but if you actually get the rebates, it will only cost $750 (plus tax on 900), free shipping. In others words, after tax it's almost the same price...IF you get the rebates.

Me, I would get the vastly superior unit from a well-known and highly-respected company for approximately the same price, and not deal with rebates for an inferior unit from a company I've never heard of.
