I'd start thinking virus. And yes you can still get a virus even with Norton installed and updated.

:( I was afraid of that.. but I was starting to think that as well.......... I don't know how I'm gonna get rid of it besides reformating... :( :( I really don't wanna do that. I'll lose all my music, movies, standup comedy, and everything else. Cause I won't be able to save anything for the fact of not knowing where the virus has spread to. :( I think people who make viruses r pretty sad.

Save all your stuff on a second hard drive. Then remove the second hard and don't connect it until you do a fresh install complete with a antivirus program. That way you should be protected and it should catch whatever virus is on the second drive. :)

Ya, like nascar said.

And if by any chance you don't have a second drive to use. Don't forget all you really need is to install the O/s and Anti Virus, so any old small cheap drive should do long as it's big enough to install the basics. Might even be able to borrow one. You should be able to find out if you got a virus, fix it, or if something else fix that too.

Install New small drive as master only, setup O/s and anti virus, install your old drive as slave, then use small master drive to boot and scan your big drive you got now. I think that should work.

I mention that because around here most the people I know with systems have only one drive, and not easy to borrow an 80gig or larger :)

I've got old drives I can use this way and for loaning out, 850meg, 250meg, 1 gig, and 2 gig.
Not worth selling them, so I keep em for loaners :)

Also if you know what all your missing files are, depending on what they are, you can probably copy them from the smaller drive over to the drive you have now if you know where they go. I have done that before when something has gotten trashed. Like a problem I had starting a system, it would boot to the windows logo then tell me safe to shut down! Finnaly I found the bad files causing it, copied them to floppie from another system and overwrote the bad files with them. Fixed it!

SO if you don't have a second drive and can't buy a good one, look for a working small spare free or cheap :)

Also I think I saw you had screen problems at yahoo in another post? I have several yahoo acounts in this family of 3, my main box has been acting wierd also but none of the others do and that is using different systems to access it also. I think it's a Yahoo thing? First go to check mail, and nothing on the left side where folders and such should be, just mail heading across the full width of the screen. Corrects itself after I read or delete the first time and the page refreshes.

I realize your IE is not working right so this might not work, but you can use a free online java virus scanner/cleaner here:

http://housecall.antivirus.com/

Otherwise, as others indicated, do a basic windows install on a small drive, get Norton working and updated on it, then use it to scan your original drive.

If you have access to a second computer just connect your drive as a slave and scan it from that system's anti-virus app.

free online java virus scanner/cleaner ???

I'll have to check that out, basically how would that work? Does it download a program to the system and the virus defs.? Or does it actually scan from the net somehow?

I might find that useful myself :)
Thanks.

I'm pretty sure it's just a java applet that you download (pops up one of those boxes where you have to click "yes" saying you trust it) then it scans whichever drives you choose. It's a good scanner too...

demonmonkey1234 - usually virus' don't go after videos/music. A lot of time they just find necessary windows files and currupt them. Though I did get one virus once which infected EVERY executeable/zip file which made it a bitch--had to redownload all my game patches and all.

A good idea for the future is to partition your hard drive so that if you do get a virus all you have to do is format your C:\ partition, leaving the others (with your games/music/videos) alone...that way when you get back from a fresh install you still have everything right there. Another good idea is after you set it all up, get a spare drive and make a ghost image of your C:\ partition and put it on that spare. That way if you ever have any problems in the future, you won't even have to install windows--just put in a norton boot disk and load that image :)

I've perfected this art by now :D Anytime I download a new video driver I backup my hard drive just for the hell of it. If it happnes to hose my system or screw up performance in a way that I can't get it back to how it was then I can always load that image :) Ghost is a wonderful utility.

yea I know, but when I built my computer I Wasn't paying attention and formatted it instead of partitioning it first... well I didn't feel like reformatting it again to make partions. But yea those would all be good ideas, Im gonna try and get another drive and copy atleast my music and game patches, cause I mean I have well lemme go check 450MB's of patches, 3.72 GB of music/videos, and 69 MB of pictures, all of which I really don't wanna lose in the reformat process so I'm gonna have to find like a 5 GB harddrive and do some transfering over night. Not to mention keeping my Counter-strike maps and Diablo 2 stuff. Everything's just a pain in the ass. :( :( :( :(

well I can't get through my folders through My computer but I found a trick around it. Windows Explorer! LoL u can't actually open the folders but u can highlight them and u can expand em to get to the sub folders, and the weird thing is as soon as I paste a dll file in the folder all the files show up until I re open the folder. Well I'm proud of myself for now :p :D maybe I can replace the norton DLL and scan my computer and maybe just maybe still save it :o :D
