Heatsink question
Right now I am looking at getting a Thermaltake Volcano 9 for my comp. First off, any opinions on it would be appreciated. Second, it says it fits a socket 370/462, but it says it can be used up to a XP2600. Since I know AMDs are now Socket A, I am just making sure that this will actually work on my 2100 (I hate buying stuff that doesn't work). Thanks in advance.
socket 462 is socketA. but I really wouldnt sugest anything thermaltake makes. I woudl go with any of these brands: Alpha, thermalRight, Dynatron, or even a few of the zalman ones.
All personall opinion though but thermaltake is just inferior in quality and funcionality.

what is it with people and that piece of shit volcano 9? is it the orange fan on it that looks cool or what cause other than that fan the heatsink itself is a giant pile o crap. It doesn't mount easy at all cause its too big for the clip its even worse to get it off and its a piss poor old design as it is. U can have a thermalrite SK7 and a 40cfm fan for the same price and have a better heatsink all around.

Whoa Pred, I didn't mean to offend anyone!
This is why i posted this before making any purchasing decisions, it was just the first one I saw at a decent price. Thanks for the advice though, and I will look into some of those other ones Nexus.
Hmmm, well, now I have another question. What would you guys suggest to buy and where should I get it from???

I would only suggest a V9 to one I did not like.
It's the most pain in the *&%$ heatsink I've ever tried. Pred remember how much a pain that sob is. I almost had to use a crow bar to remove it from my mobo.
The SK6+ is a good low cost solution, higher end I'd suggest the SK7 or the SLK800/600. All will allow you to o/c if you wish and with all will need a fan. Just about any decent 80mm fan will do. The sk6+ specs says it fits just a 60 or 70mm fan but an 80mm one will also fit, just need to bend the clips some.
Good places to get them are any in our links above, KDC, CrazyPC & SVC.
For some needed tips on installing them see here , 2nd page.

lol i didn't mean to come off as a jackass i was having a bad day yesterday. The V9 is a very poorly designed heatsink thermal take i think put about an hr into R&D on it. Thermalrite makes damn good sinks... sk7 slk800 both are good and take 80mm fans so u can get a 30-40 cfm fan and still have it quiet with effective cooling for overclocking if you do so...

Well, thanks to you guys, i'm going to be spending more money...
Oh well, it was bound to happen. Here's now what i'm thinking: SK7 with an Enermax Whisper Fan. I'm not OCing or anything, and I would like to have everything be as quiet as possible. Last thoughts appreciated!!!
And Pred, just remember, the best way to get yourself out of a bad mood is to give it to someone else.

Never used that whisper fan, but it should be ok. Other good ones are those Antec LED fans (not too loud if you have just one) , stealth fans, tornado's (only if you are deaf) or the YS Tech fans. Though the ys tech fans are best if connected to a rhoebus. For quiet the stealth is, as I'm sure the whisper one.

NEW QUESTION
Alright, I'm pretty much done with the heat sink thing, but now my problem is somehow connecting all the fans I'm about ready to install. They all have 3 pin connectors, and I need to convert them to Molex. I know you can buy adapters to do this, but SVC is sold out and I can't find anywhere else to get them. Anyone have some advise of what I should do or know where I can get the adapters???

Yes I agree, the Volcano 9 is the WORST buy I have ever done, and I bought a Voodoo 3 2000 PCI. Hard to install and doesn't cool that well. It was cheap and available when I upgraded. If I had the chance I will buy a new one in a heartbeat and will eventually.
