Computer won't boot, probably Norton's fault...help!

I guess I could REALLY use some help this time. I recently installed WIN XP on a new computer. Everything was fine for a couple of days then all of a sudden Norton Antivirus wouldn't work (used Systemworks disk). The same disk worked just fine on my other computer. I tried reinstalling it and removing it, etc. and finally gave up. I later put in a freeware anti-virus but in the meantime contracted a trojan. Nothing would kill it and the OS sdtarted to do funny things. I figured it was only a couple of days so I reformatted the hdd and reinstalled XP. After the mobo and video drivers I went right to Norton, just to see. Sure enough, in the middle of the install (mid-clean sweep, actually) the program stopped dead. It said it had encountered a problem and that I should uninstall it and then reinstall it. Nowhere was it listed in add/remove so I simply rebooted. Well, the computer will not boot up, no matter what I do. I even reset the CMOS. The power goes on but windows won't boot. HELP! Thanks in advance.

At least it is IMO.. I installed it on a system of mine a few months back, and as soon as I rebooted BAM! BSOD! It said something about Norton System Works has stopped boot. I couldn't do anything to get it back. The rig ran fine for 3 months w/o it. So I had to format, left NSW off and no problems.. heh.. Hope you get it figured out.. eGo

I'm not real familiar with this problem, but can you at least get to a c prompt?

If so then I'd do a format c: /s /u

Reinstall xp and forget norton. Install <a href="http://lockdowncorp.com/bots/downloadswatit.html">swat it</a> and run a full trojan scan. Though the new download should be updated, you should still check for a newer update after it's installed. This is free too btw.

Then install the http://www.grisoft.com av and do a full scan. Norton has never been a help to me, only a pain.

How do you like that free firewall software? How long have you used it? Any problems?

I've been avoiding using a firewall, as I'm still on a modem connection. Should I be concerned about attacks if I'm on a modem? What about playing games while using a firewall?

I use Norton, but I run it in manual mode only. I do have another program called BioClean that runs all the time looking for trojans. It's usually updated several times a week.

I also used it when I was using a modem connection too, and I had plenty try and access my system then too. I use to use zonealarm but I like kerio better. It's almost too easy to use. And it works.

Any sites that do access the net a box pops up to ask you about permissions first. If it's something you know and trust you just have to accept permissions once for it and it will remember. Things like outlook, your browser etc..

Everyone should have a firewall these days.

I've been using System Works for a good 8 months now with no problems. All I installed was Ghost and Anti-Virus. Did you install ALL the fancy programs? (I got 2002 by the way). But, now ya got me worried. However, I think I'd be alright..

System Works is a code bloated resource nightmare. Only thing you need to install is NAV & Ghost (if you use Ghost). NDD and Speedisk are okay, although frankly I'd rather use scandisk & defrag in WinXP.

DO NOT install the other crap ESPECIALLY the System Doctor and Protected Recycling Bin. MAJOR resource hogs and often lead to stability issues. You don't want anything running in the background except NAV.
