Deleting ENUM entries in the registry

Device drivers that are uninstalled still leave entries in the registry under ENUM which I believe are Device Manager entries that can't be deleted. If I have a problem with a driver I like to completely uninstall it and start from scratch, but I can't since these entries are permanently entered into the registry with no apparent way to remove them. I have encountered times where that causes problems since the driver is really already there and no conformation boxes appear when you go to reinstalled them they way they did when they wereinstalled the first time. Especially with video devices where it is more critical.

Without reinstalling a previous image file (if there is one), how can these entries be deleted? I use Registry Crawler to find these left over entries of which there usually are many. This is running 2k w/sp3 and logged in as a administrator.

Are you trying to delete them by using REGEDIT or REGEDT32?

afaik, most people use RegEdit, which isn't quite as powerful as regedt32 - so give it a shot too.
You can change key permissions with regedt32, whereas I dont think you can with RegEdit.

(START>RUN>regedt32 btw, but you knew that I'm sure)

I have always used Reg Edit. Someone else suggested using Reg Edit 32. It did work, though it is harder to navigate with that version. How do you keep the full permission without re-enabling it everytime you delete another key?

Well, you can try going to a root key, like HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, clickong on Permissions, making sure the "Allow inheritable permissions from parent to propogate etc etc" and clicking apply but that's about it. Some programs like to install as the SYSTEM account, and keep's it's permissions to SYSTEM only. Ill look into it a bit and see if I can find another way

Someone else suggested using Device Manager and checking 'show hidden devices' and do it in safe mode!
