which hdd to get?

Post by marscheese »

I'm wanting to get a hdd to put all my movie files on. I plan to have many, many movies, and I would like to have all of them on my hdd, so I don't have to take the time to find the VCD/DVD, put it in the drive, work through the menus, etc (I'm a lazy guy). Right now I have somewhere around 80 gig of movies. What I want to do is get a hdd and compress it (which I hear doubles the size). Though (from what I hear), this makes it slower, what do I care, it's going to be holding movies. My problem is what hdd to get. Should I get a 100GB (b/c of it's 9 second seek time), or a 120 or 160 GB...usually seek times around 12-13 sec? Also, should I be concerned about getting a 5200 or a 7200 hdd? I don't see the point of spending extra money on speed that I don't think will make a difference.

Suggestions? Comments?

thanks in advance.

i think the RPMS also have to do with the seek time. so a 5400 will have more of a seek time than a 7200

Personally, I would get a 120g 7200rpm. It seems to fit just right.
Also, i am not sure, but I thought a few boards have a problem recognizing HDs over 120g unless they had a update BIOS from manufacturer that makes it support higher HDs, or without a ata133 card
Gone for good. But never say never

WHatever size and what not you decide, I recommend buying a Samsung drive. Excellant construction, whisper quiet, and the best part: One of the few hdd makers out there that still have a 3 year warranty :)

You should ask svarasdfl;kjasdrflk (however the fuck you spell his name) for one of those rack-mountable servers over on the net+ side. Put a couple big ass hard drives in there and just make it one big file server.

Only thing you gotta worry about then are the hard drive size not being recognized since it's and older machine, but hey it'd be free so ya got nothin' to loose :) Plus it's semi-portable (if you call 50lbs portable ;)
