Memory restrictions??

Post by Ihackit »

Hello again guys, been a while. I have a question. I have an eMachine (as some may remember, hehe) that is suppose to handle up to 2 gig of memory ( supports pc1600 and pc2100 ). I have been running two sticks of 256mb pc2100. I have been having a lag issuse while playing DAoC, an online game, and i have heard that running a full gig of memory would possibly clear the lag. So i went to newegg.com and ordered 2x 512mb PC2100 Crucial memory sticks. I installed them and low and behold my board wouldn't post. I took the memory out and put in my old memory and it posted fine and booted up. So i put in one stick of the Crucial and it did fine, i put in the 2nd and nothing, i swapped the two sticks around and it booted fine, and shows 1 gig of memory. Is it possible that the 2nd stick is not working properly but is still showing up as working? My puter is running quicker now and the lag is somewhat better, but i can't help but think that the 2nd stick isn't contributing what it should.

if a game doesnt play lag free with 256, or even 512, then I doubt one gig will make a difference

second.....whats your connection?

third.....whats the full name of the game? just so I can see what the system requirements are and such
Gone for good. But never say never

oh, i meet the minimuim requirements and then some. The game is Dark Age of Camelot, in which i am running the expansion as well Shrouded Isle's. Tis is a mmrpg, in which it runs nearly lag free untill the RvR (realm vs realm) battles. Once that meany people converge into one location for battle it begins to lag. Most successfull RvRers are running 1 gig of memory for this reason.

Yeah newer games like BF1942 really need at least 512Mb.

IHackit: Memory is very funny - it's not always a good versus bad stick issue. Memory quality can be a gray area.

I've seen systems running what is technically defective memory just fine as long as it's used for normal desktop stuff. Try to run something that requires a lot of memory bandwidth (3D game, video capture, etc) and it BSODs.

You may certainly have a bad or weak memory stick. I'd say if it doesn't POST with one of the new sticks, you should have it exchanged.

ALSO when you ordered it from Crucial did you just order some generic memory or did you use their database to find your specific computer's model? Some computers won't work properly with generic stuff - the Emachine might be fussy.

There's an excellent free DOS-based memory tester I use to test memory on client's systems:
http://www.simmtester.com/PAGE/products ... wnload.asp

Just run the Quick test, although if you want to be sure it's nice to run the Burn-in all night.

Hey ya Ed, missed lately in Midgard, get your arse back.. LoL!! Anyways, bout the memory and to where i bought it, i didn't go thru Crucial, i bought Crucial brand thru Newegg.com. However, i will try that program and see what i come up with. The game is playing better now, I will admit, heck i can run three accounts at the same time even, hehe, just had to adjust my virtual memory. The only thing i haven't done yet that i should've was to run each stick individually and see if one just refuses to post, if so, i will exchange it. From what i hear Newegg's customer service is great , so this shouldn't be a problem. Thanks guys.

One more thing off the subject, i am new to these types of forums and I really plan on being a regular here, i want to know how to go about posting a pic and so forth with my posts, any help???

you'd have to find some place to host the image for you..
usually your isp would give you some web storage/space so you can hold images files there..
if not, LMK and i'll host the pics for you and send you the link to them
there are various quick buttons above the posting section (where you type in your message) that makes much of your posting functions easier.. from links to images, etc.

hey... don't forget to get me diamonds ;)
