I have installed winnt4 on my new dualie p3 1ghz rig. ive never used nt4 before, only destop os's like 95/98/me/xp. I have to install a program called web works for work purposes. I need to get it up and running and then initalize the server(web server) part of NT4. web works requires it to run as you run the program on a server(Dual 1ghz with NT4) while any other computer on the network running IE 4.0 or higher can access it as it is accessed thru IE.
Problem is when i click on server, it says "the server service has not been started. Would you like to start the server service?"
I click on yes and it says attempting to connect/initalize...
THen it comes up with an error "Not enough server storage is available to process this command"
can anyone explain why as i need this for work. Its an 80gb HD partitioned into
C: = 4GB
D: = 72GB
ram is 768mb
Problem #2
I have a DLink DFE-530TX Rev. A1 NIC installed for networking purposes. I have found what i believe to be the correct drivers for Rev. A1 as there are several revisions. The comp cannot see the NIC and I have tried to check to see if it is an IRQ but not quite certain or confident about what i am doing.
It is installed, connected to the hub and lights are on. It was working before. Do I Have some settings incorrect?
OH and I have installed SP6a so from that angle it should be fine.
Thanks in advance as I am quite stumped and am a noob in the world of NT4

Hey Blackbandit. Regarding your NIC, NT won't see it because it's not a plug-and-play operating system. You'll have to add it to your system manually by right-clicking Network Neighborhood, choosing Properties, clicking Adapters, and clicking Add. Type the exact path to the location of your drivers, and click OK. NT should then find and install the driver. If it's not the correct driver, NT will display an error message saying "Adaper is not present in the system".
With regard to the server service, I think it might be crapping out because your NIC isn't properly configured, not because of a storage problem. Try rebooting after you've configured the NIC, and, if that doesn't work, use Partition Magic or some third party partitioning utility to increase the size of your C: partition.

Bandit, this is a system for work? You are aware that NT Server support no longer officially exists? I'd recommend Win2K server if it's practical.
As for your server service, I think chewy is right. This is also an excellent place to find info on NT problems: http://www.jsiinc.com/reghack.htm
As chewy pointed out, NT is not plug and play so EVERYTHING has to be installed manually. PnP has spoiled us - ah I can remember LONG sessions just trying to get NT to recognize a new stinking serial port...

oh Mr. FlyingPenguin...
I like your innovative way of flying for a bird that is flightless
anywho...I understand exactly what you are saying but the thing is at work, last June(2002) our old SAP servers(for purchasing, work orders, inventory etc) were being shut down. We had to find a new program(out of my hands) but we encountered a program that was cheap and effective for our business. It supplies all the software tools we need to run. Web Works is what it is called and right now the software can only be run unter NT 4.0 with SP4+. It is interfaced thru IE 4.0 or higher from any machine on the network running win 95 or newer. I am hoping they will come out with a revised software to work under win 2k or something but until the day.
So i do completely agree with you both but its not feesable at the moment
as for the drivers, I am 99.9% certain they are the correct drivers but still no DHCP server can be found. maybe i am still doing something wrong as I have cable internet on a hub between 3 computers at home here. In the networking properties i have gotten it to add a Dlink 530tx NIC but cannot get it to automatically configure to be on the network or see any of the other comps or even the internet
I have installed SP6a then the drivers and then SP6a again but no go... I will look at the page you recommended on monday. Thanks for your time and recommendations as any input is appreciated. Like i said, i am not used to NT or any server application as i have only been using client OS's like 3.1/95/98/me/xp

Those drivers you installed are not properly working on the NIC i had that problem on NT4 were i installed a 3 com nic and i thought i had proper driver but still could not get dhcp lease. Double check the nics driver working, do you get any errors on startup???? Mine would give me error on boot saying that service has failed.
Blackbandit, how many IP addresses are available to you through your cable provider? If you've connected your cable modem and two other computers to a hub, one or both of the other two computers might be grabbing all of your available IP addresses, leaving none for the NT PC. You can verify if this is the case by shutting down your other two computers normally, then rebooting your NT machine to see if it grabs an IP.
If this is not the case, I would check the network cable running between the NT machine and hub. It should be a straight-through cable, not a crossover. It also sounds to me like there might be a computer name conflict between two computers on your network. NT's workstation and server services won't start if another computer on the network is using the same name. Check the Event Viewer on the NT machine to see if this is the case.

Setup the IP manually and try to ping the router or another computer.
Could also be that the DHCP service is enabled on the server (although I don't think so since it would assign a default IP address if it was).
NT sometimes had trouble with certain NICs. Try another one. NICs are cheap. All should come with NT drivers. I recommend 3Com on a server - there's a reason they cost so much more, and it's best to have a nice reliable NIC on a server.
You might also want to see if the NIC is sharing an IRQ channel. In the POST status display, does the NIC show as sharing an IRQ? If so, move it to another slot so it doesn't share.

HORRAY!!! Thanks for all of your imput...WE have solved the problem...
Fearfox, it was doing exactly what you said at the end of your post "Mine would give me error on boot saying that service has failed"
For everyones record as we learn something new each day, it turned out to be the Cat 5. Either it was not working properly or it was a crossover cable. Either event it is working great now!!
I really appreciate all of your help. I canot believe it was something so simple but I have never even bought a crossover cable before so i dont know where it came from
Take care all,
BB
