Keyboards

Post by demonmonkey1234 »

I was sitting here playing my guitar yesterday, at the computer talkin to friends, with a bottle of water sitting on the mouse pad. You guessed it... I knocked the bottle of water all over the keyboard. Although the keyboard worked for the next hour or so after I tried to dry it off the best I could... When I came back from my super bowl party I had a continueous(however u spell that beep code. :p )beep code. I was a little irritated but it was my own stupid fault, and I was wondering if any1 else had any secrets on getting it to work again. I really don't wanna have to replace it because it's brand new... Like a week old. I was so mad, but I can't take this busted space bar for much longer. :( :( :(

If it's only a week old and you still have the reciept you could always try taking it back. It's a little immoral since you did it yourself, but it might be worth a shot.

Too late now.

For future reference: The secret to preventing ANY electronic device from being damaged by water is to IMMEDIATELY disconnenct it from power and let it dry completely. If it's a battery powered device you must immediately remove the batteries EVEN IF IT"S TURNED OFF!

The reason is that electricity can still flow weakly across wet contacts.

What causes the damage is any small current flow across wet metal will cause that metal to deteriorate - metal ions will flow through to water (similar to how electro-plating works). This causes electrical terminals to completely coorode in just hours.

Without electricity it won't coorode and will work fine once it dries out.
