Why me... My Cd Drives...

Post by demonmonkey1234 »

Neither of my cdrom drives r showing up in My Computer, When I checked in the BIOS to see what was up my Master Cd-rom wasn't even showing up, and the slave, was showing up but the name usually says something like Samsung blah blah blah, but now it looks like chicken scratch... My friend suggested that I check the cables make sure it has power and everything, so I did, they all seem to be pushed in tight. The little green light though on the master drive right now is flashing... and if I press the button it will go solid and open the drive. I put a cd that has autostart on it and the cd won't even load, but that little green light will certainly keep flashing forever... So frustrating.

Also, my computer has been recently freezing up in games, and earlier tonight for the first time, on the regular desktop. I dunno what's going on.

1 other thing, my internal temp. is 111 degrees F... I have 6 small, not really powerful, but quiet fans, and one side one that is pretty strong... plus the one on the CPU and 2 on power supply... any suggestions to any of my problems would be greatly appreciated.. :( :: :mad  :( :argue

Did this all just start recently or was their any hardware changes?

First thing I'd try is remove one and try each as master individually. That way you might can see if one is any good. If still the same troubles then I'd say you have a bad cdrom, especially considering the noise you are getting. It does happen. If you have a working cdrom from another system, I'd try it by itself.

Then I'd try is a new cable or one that you know works. Then try different power connectors and be sure they are connected properly, all 4 pins making contact. And double check the jumpers to be sure one is master and one slave.

Your case temp is way too high. Check the fans for dust buildup. A small fine paintbrush or a vacume is good for cleaning them. Otherwise try running with the side panel off to see if that helps sytem stability. How is your cpu temp?

Also do you have some of the fans as intake and some as exhaust.

If you are using XP as your os then I'd run a repair install.

good luck :) Post back any results and we'll try to help further is still no go.

Temps not too bad...thats only 40-ish celcius which is normal--for AMD atleast (dunno what he's running). If you aren't seeing it in POST then there is a problem hardware related, I would think. Just swap CD-ROMs if possible, try 'em on different channels, try different ribbon cables if ya have 'em...

That's 40ish ambient, add about 10-20C degrees for CPU and you got a hot processor.

I'd also suggest what blade did and see what happens. Also, try disconnecting power to just the CD-ROM that is making the noise and see what happens.

lol well thx for the suggestions but there's so many :( o well I guess that's what happens... Tobad I'm sick right now so I don't feel like doing squat... but I guess I'll give it a shot, but I know it's getting power cause that little green light is on, but yea I'll definately check some of that stuff out. Maybe tomorrow morning or something I'm not in the greatest of moods to go hackin away at my pc... I'll post everything here sometime tomorrow, I don't know how the fans could be dusty, this computer has only been runnin a month... There r 4 intakes in the front, 2 exhausts powerful 1 in the side, and smaller on in the back..

If the BIOS is displaying one of the CD drive names in gibberish, that implies to me you have a bad ribbon cable or the connectors on it are dirty.

Unplug the ribbon form the two CD drives AND the mobo, then re-insert it. This causes the connectors to be scraped clean, improving the connection. I see it all the time.

I'd recommend changing the ribbon as well. They're cheap. One gives me trouble I toss it in the trash.

You are just imagining it, so WAKE UP!!!!

hehe, just kidding :D :p

Hope it stays that way but don't be surprised the next time or 3 when you reboot those problems come back. If so just reboot again, or try what we suggested. Hope they stay working. :)

I still think you have a dirty ribbon connector and it'll crop up again. Worth it to just remove and insert the connectors once to clean them.
