I was replacing a bad CPU fan and fired it up and the PSU just EXPLODED! Pieces of caps flew out the exhaust fan. Scared the crap out of us all.
Culprit was a screw that had been previously left in the case - case out from under the mobo when I turned the case over. Must've shorted the 12 or 5 volt rail.
No biggie - I always carry a spare PSU in the car and the rest of the computer's fine. I've seen a PSU burn up before, but never explode.
Haven't done this in a while - blew up a client's PSU...

I've had 3 explode very loudly but nothing ever came out of the power supply except for flames. Another just did a semi quiet pop. That does shock ya doesn't it, an unexpected loud gun-like noise.
