Any T.V. experts?

Post by Hipnotic_Tranz »

What would cause a t.v. to do somethin' like this:

<img src=http://mywebpages.comcast.net/hipnotic_tranz/pca/tv.jpg>

<a href="http://mywebpages.comcast.net/hipnotic_tranz/pca/tv.MOV" target="_NEW">Video Clip</a> of the t.v. messin' up in action (~3mb).

Is this something that could be cheaply fixed or is it just too hard to tell? I got the T.V. for free about a year ago (it needed a new power supply) and it worked fine up until the past month or so... if you hit the t.v. when it's spassin' out like in the vid, it'll usually fix it (somewhat--it's better to watch it like the first pic rather than it constantly jumping around like the movie).

My uninformed, uneducated and probably wrong guess would be the tube is getting ready to bite the big one. You need a hdtv any way Nate so start saving your pennys. :D

Is there a reset button anywhere? If not then maybe try unplugging it and wait a few minutes, then plug it back in. I had similar happen before and that helped me. In my case I believe it was static causing the problem. That may not be what's causing your problem but it's worth a shot to try.

If no go then I'd also try unplugging all other connections and plugging them back in.

Sounds like a good idea d_b....how about you pass over about 250,000 pennies for my cause ;)

Nope, no reset anywhere that I know of. I also had the hunch it might be static but I dunno. I'll try unplugging it when it stops working :o It comes and goes <img src=http://mywebpages.comcast.net/hipnotic_ ... es/sad.gif>

I read somewhere that you can use a soldering iron as a degaus? But it takes a long time to get it to do it's thing.. You might try doing a search for degausing a TV? Just a thought.. eGo

magnetized tvs usually have pink or purple patches (in my experiance) on the screen, looks to me like some component may be failing. i had a tv do that to me with the edges going concave. it was that high voltage thing in mine that died after a month.

does it make any different sounds when it does that... might just be the flyback coil thats going bad... that or one of the guns or steering coils is pooping out.

Well as someone who is an electronic tech and has done a little TV work let me chime in.

First off it is NOT a problem with the tube. It's electronic. Degaussing won't fix it

One of two possibilities: It may just be dust or moisture on a spark gap. Sometimes you'll hear a popping or sparking sound associated with the visual artifact. Just blowing off the circuit board with compressed air MIGHT fix it.

More likely you have a weak high voltage transistor that's getting ready to go.

The good thing is that this is generally a cheap fix - especially if you catch it before it fails and does more damage.

Take it to a SMALL mom & pop TV shop. It's a nickle and dime part. My guess is $100 - $125 and that's mostly labor. Maybe even under $100 if it's a small shop. If I'm right it's a $5 part and an hour labor.

The reason I recommend a SMALL mom & pop shop is that they'll have the time to actually LOOK at the thing while you're there and give you an estimate on the spot. As soon as the tech sees what it's doing he'll know exactly what's wrong.

BTW: Yes, if you ever accidently magnetize your tube which will make it look blobby colored you can use a soldering GUN (not iron) or tape demagnetizer to degause it. You move the gun in slow big spirals around the tube moving away from the tube slowly.

Yep, family guy is great :) I have all 3 seasons on my PC....kinda sad though I wish they made more :(

It doesn't make any noises when it goes in and out like that. I'll probably just have to run it to some small store. We took it to H.H. Greg when I first got it and parts & labor were only about $100 for the new powersupply (it would come on and off randomly).

FP - Thanks, I'll have to look around for some small electronic shops. I'll probably print out a picture of what it does in case it doesn't happen to screw up at the time I show 'em (my luck!)

BillyGoat - It's 27" Great T.V. till this started happening (atleast great for its' age). It must have been top-of-the-line whwen it was bought (my guess is about 10 years ago?) cause it has S-Video on it. The thing fits PERFECTLY in my entertainment cabinent as well :)
