wanna help me solve a prob?

Post by Absolut Talent »

ok......i got this computer

its a pent2 400 and its got about 64mb ram (its a old dell) and win98 SE
thats about all I know about it.

But i have a problem......whenever i try to connect to the internet, the program errors out and crashes

I have tried AOL 5, 6, 7, and I have also tried to connect either through IE or with the dial up conections

But it dials up (i hear the modem) and it gets to the point of connecting. Then it checks the user name and password and hte program errors out and crashes.

I cant think of wtf to do. I have ran the IE repair tool, I have uninstalled and reinstalled the programs.

I would like to avoid reformatting

Any suggestions?
Gone for good. But never say never

I have tried AOL 5, 6, 7

You are asking why? :D :p

I'd try uninstalling and reinstalling dial up networking. tcp ip and the other. That's helped me before.

I think Blade is on the trail.
It sounds as if it's crashing on the handshake. If it's not too late try a third party program like cello winsock or another dial-up tool where you can more or less by-pass some of the 98 tcp/ip stack.I had a 16bit (I'm looking for it now)
that I used when dial-up-networking did the same thing to me.It worked and I just used the same settings in 98.
Hope this helps and if you need to drop a line and I'll either send a url or the file if I can.
Bill
ps. The reason I used a third party sft ware was to make sure the modem wasn't screwed up.
