backing up stuff

Post by VooDoo »

copy c:\windows\desktop\hello.txt \\Voodoo3\c\WINDOWS\Desktop\hello.txt

i want to be able to backup my favorites (and other files) with one key stroke i got the above command line to work on a full access network but i dont want to keep voodoo3 full access to do this

my question is:

what will have to add (like a password switch or something) to that command line to allow this box to copy to voodoo3

but still keep others at a lanpartys from moving and deleting stuff

if that made and sence

me
thanx

What OS are you running? That'll make a big difference.

Let me see if I understand:

You want to be cable to copy files from one computer to another on your network, but you plan on using the same computers at a LAN party and are worried about allowing full access, right?

The best thing to do is to use password protection. How you do this depends on what OS you're using. If it's Win9x then you can assign a Full Access password in the drive share. If it's Win2K or XP then you need to create a user account on the system with the shared drive using the same username that the other computer logs on with.

Bottom line is that only someone with the right password (and in the case of 2K or XP also the correct user name) will be able to have full access to that drive.

Here's a tutorial on how to setup file sharing with security: http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto/net.asp

So you're sharing from an ME box? When you setup the share you just enter a password under "Full Access".

You then need to access the shared drive at least ONCE from Windows from the other computer because the first time you do it will prompt you for a password (if you do it from DOS you'll just get an error).

When you enter the password it'll give you the option (checked by default) to remember that password in the future. After that you should be able to access the shared drive from DOS.

Fair warning: Win9x systems don't handle network paths very well from the DOS command line - you're better off setting up a mapped drive so you can use a drive letter.
