So I got my new mouse

Post by Hipnotic_Tranz »

...AND IT ROCKS! :D Damn thing acts like a ball mouse, I swear. No amount of jerking will get this baby off ( ;) ) into some wierd tangent like my old (original) Explorer. And the fact that it has 8 (yes 8!) customizable buttons is pretty nice as well. I jumped into a game of Q2 & Q3 and could literally feel myself playing better. I was making shots with the rail that I've not done in a long time--shots I even wondered "how in the hell did I get that?" :)

I'll have to get used to the feel cause I'm used to a larger mouse and I'm used to having both my pinky and ring finger kinda hang off the right side, where as with this one its as if they want you to have 3 fingers on top since there is this little "ledge." It also seemed like the made the scroll positioned more near the index finger which I don't necessarily know if I like since I'm used to scrolling with my middle (though I've noticed most scroll with their index so maybe I'm just backwards :) )

Either way, the Logitech MX500 which was recommended from you peeps is a great mouse. I suggest that if you are lookin' for a new one and if you like the feel, check it out :) I bought it based upon reviews and so I never felt it before hand so right now I just gotta get used to it--which I'm sure I can since it is rather comfortable--just different than what I'm used to. Something else I noticed is that it has a *very* fine "grain" to it so that you fingers don't slip around easily. That or I'm just going crazy :)

Well thats good, I'm not hte only one ;) The only thing I don't like so far about it is the fact that the wheel is kinda hard to click down and it doesn't scroll all that smoothly.... ....but maybe thats just cause I'm used to my (worn?) Explorer.

I'm really starting to like this mouse and I found out something. I play better with mouse acceleration off, which makes since to me atleast becuase with it off then the movement is constant so my brain knows what to expect. I played atleast 6 games of Q3 going back and forth with it on and off and I noticed myself making better shots with it off. Maybe it was just a coincidence, but I dunno. I could really feel myself playing better and I did make some awsome shots while it was off.

The problem is that with it off, in windows the pointer is just too slow. I have to actually pick up the mouse and move it a lot of the time just to get to the other side of the screen and I'm not used to this nor do I really like it. I have the speed as high as it can go with the logitech software... ...any ideas on making it a little quicker without the help of mouse acceleration? (cause it would be a pain to have to turn it off every single time I wanna play a game.)

I'd contact Logitech - with the mouse speed slider set to full it should zoom across the screen even without acceleration. Maybe there's fix or a driver update.

You sure you don't have any utilities installed for your old mouse like Intellipoint? Might be interfering.

For gaming you should ALWAYS have acceleration off. Games (at least FPS games) involve linear movement (you move the move a set amount that always cooresponds to the same amount in the game).

If you enable acceleration then your movement is logarithmic (starts slow and speeds up) and there's no way you can do accurate turns.

Not to mention the sudden movements in an FPS game cause radical turns if acceleration is enabled - especilly with optical mice. This leads to the dreaded "looking up at the sky after a fast turn" problem with optical mice.

Acceleration = BAD.

I don't even like it for the desktop since I'm a Photoshop user. Then only time it's practical is if you're NOT doing precise work and you have a very area to move the mouse in.

I uninstalled my IntelliMouse software before I installed the logitech MouseWare software and there are no traces of it that I know of. I've noticed acceleration is bad but it's a pain having it so slow. I mean, it's not horrible, but I'm used to not having to pick up the mouse hardly at all. That is how I navigate in windows and the only time I pick up the mouse when I game is if I make a sharp turn.

I threw an email to logitech so we'll see what they have to say--and just for kicks I put the slider all the way down. My god, who in the hell would use it like this? Starting from the top of my everglide giganta, I had to pick up the mouse 5 times to get it to go from the top of my screen to the bottom. Rediculous!

[edit]
is it possible for any other logitech owners out there to share what happens when you put the mouse speed slider all the way up? Is it really quick or just average or?

I have a logitech optical mouse and don't have a problem but I don't have the mouseware software installed. I ise the native XP drivers. Here are my sttings: enhance pointer precision not enabled and the pointer speed is set on the 8th mark. if i set the pointer all the way up it zips across the screen at lightning speed. I might get me the mx 500 tomorrow...if i do i'll let you know what it does for me.

have a good one :D

Thats cool. See, I kinda wanted the software to take advantage of the extra buttons since I assume Win2k won't know what to do with them unless I use the software (didn't try without though). If ya pick one up, LMK cause I'm curious. I'm using PS/2 rather than USB but that shouldn't make any difference.

Well, I didn't get my my mouse. Went to BrestBuys, CircusCity and Wallyworld and no one had one. That kind of pissed me off as last week BrestBuy and Circus city had plenty of them. They even took down the price placards for the MX500. They had the MX700 and the MX300. The main reason I went was to get the new MOHAA expansion pack, Spearhead. Didn't get that either but it might not be out yet, don't know for sure.

Yeah, my friend just told me the same. If you really wanna get it I suggest newegg (although I've heard of your bad luck with them) I got it for $47 shipped.

[edit]
and I've narrowed it down to the software (what I believed all along) cause when I uninstalled MouseWare and use Win2k's defualt mouse properties, then it was MUCH quicker. I would keep it like this if only I could bind particular buttons. I didn't pay nearly $50 for a typical mouse here! :)

Went to 2 more brestbuys and another circumcision city and they didn't have the mx500. Hmmm, I smell a mouse conspiracy. :) I did get MoHAA Spearhead and it rocks.
