New mouse?

I have the old ass (original) Intellimouse Explorer. I love the mouse and all, but I've been finding that my fast FPS (q3/q2 mainly) skills lack and I think I know the problem. I think I'm still used to the ol ball mouse where you can whip it around and frag someone behind you--where as with optical you can't do that (atleast with mine) cause when you do, you just end up looking other than where you want to be shooting.

So this is my question, I think I heard that the new explorers have a higher refresh rate or somethin', which makes them smoother or some crap. All I'm interested in is, does it help when you go to whip the mouse around? Does the pointer just scatter or actually go where it's supposed to? I thinking of buying the new explorer (not wireless) if it is actually better at gaming with. Other than this (which I noticed from day 1 but opticals were new at this time and I delt with it) it's been a great mouse and still works like the day I bought it (though, very worn )

I have a $30cad Logitech Optical (plain old regular white mouse) that does 800dpi... also when you use the USB -> PS2 adapter, the Logitech driver utility allows you to change the PS2 refresh rate up to 200hz

Scrolling is very smooth, quite accurate too. I like the shape of Logitech mice compared to MS mice, so it's obvious which I'm biased too.

However, my recommendation would be the Logitech MX300 or MX500... they have the new 4.7megapixel per second sensor that's obviously kickass. I prefer the shape of the MX300, but it's all personal preference, right

Hip, the problem you have with fast movements facing you in a random direction is caused by having mouse acceleration enabled. All optical mice have this problem to some extent.

If you're a gamer you should have acceleration disabled.

I use the Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 and I love it. I have a big hand and it fits me comfortably.

The newer version does have a better resolution than the old Explorer. I've been through all three versions now.

Nathan, for my Intellipoint 3.1, it is under the mouse properties - tab Pointer Options - Pointer Speed Advanced button. However, mine was already turned off, and if I remember correctly, we have the same mouse version.

As TheBattousai said, it's in the mouse settings in Control Panel. Depending on the version of Intellipoint you have, you may need to click on the "Advanced" button next to the mouse sensitivity slider to find it.

You should also keep your mouse sensitivity at a reasonable setting in the Windows desktop. If you set it above the middle of the slider, it will be too sensitive in games and also be prone to the spinning problem.

The newer optical mice are a bit less prone to it, but you still need to disable acceleration.

I would also recommend you download the latest version of the Intellipoint software - I'm using 4.0

I'm using some quasi generic IBM optical that's actually been quite good (plus the best shape I've ever held imho) and after turning off acceleration its great

I do however miss my Razer Boomslang...the 2000 version is truly the best mouse ever for fragging IF (and this is a big if) you can get used to the lower wider profile.

Thanks. Yeah, I already knew about mouse acceleration and I've tried it with it both on and off and it doesn't seem to be any different. Looks like I'm gonna have to check out some of those logitechs at BB tonight I appreciate the commnts.

So far, I've really liked my explorer. I like the feel and how it smooth it is on my everglide, its just that it's always had has this "problem" and I just learned to deal with it. Lately, I've been realizing that I really need that extra accuracy to be able to whip around and shoot someone that is right behind me or to the sides, etc. I've always dealt with it but I've noticed I could have gotten a frag here or a frag there if it would have just kept goin' where I wanted it to.

the Logitech MX 500 looks pretty nice so far. I'm thinkin' that'll be the one since MS doesn't have a mosue that has.....8 buttons! The duel optical one won't work cause it only has one thumb button and I don't really need cordless so the MX 500 looks about right.

yea, the 500 is exactly the same as the 700...and I gata tell ya, Extreamly comfy on the hand and very nice...I need a new mouse pad...but Im gana wait for all the next gen optical pads to come out before I pick one up.

in my opinion here is a pretty decent pointer that i play fps withhttp://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouse/tbo_info.asp it has the whippability factor you may be used to. now i know its microsoft but it does work better than windows does.
