another dumb question

I wanted to enable the dmz on my dsl router - dlink dsl500- but i can't get the web interface to come up - it's sitting there at 192.168.0.1 but when i type that into the browzer i just get web site not found ???? i'm sure it's something stupid, but i can't figure it out

make sure that's the correct address.
Make sure it's on.
Make sure the cable is plugged in to a normal port, not the wan port.

Did you try pinging it ?

my old dlinks web util was 192.168.2.1

Check IPCONFIG (or WinIPCfg if it's a Win9x system) to see what your Gateway is. That will be the IP address of the router.

i did ip config and got the gateway as 192.168.0.1

i downlaoded the documentation and it says to use that address

do i have to disconnect the modem from the hub and go straight in?

the way it is set up now is dsl line>modem_router>switch>pcs

i downloaded a firmware up grade program to see if i could back door in - it sees the router at the address, but it appears i must have changed the password at some point since admin/admin doesn't work anymore - of course i can't find the documentation where i would have written down the change 18 mos ago - doh -

I have a linksys that does the same thing sometimes.
I usually try to wake it up with a few diffrent programs (icq mailwasher ect) I also try to use ftp and ping from a command prompt.If that dosen't work it's a reset and then back to square one.Wish I had a better option.

a quick visual inspection reveals not reset button or hole - tried drilling in on a straight cable - same result - i'll - there is a parallel port hookup for a console which i may try later -

http://192.168.0.1 on a browser on any computer connected to it's switch should bring it up.

Dlinks don't always have a reset button - I had to call them once about reseting a router and they had me jumper some pins on the 9-pin connector with a paper clip.

i finally got into the router via ip by turning it off and on a bunch - of course, not a lot of help sinc ei still don't know the pw

i tried tech support at my isp - then hooked up a serial cable and after a LOT if trying different settings was able to get into the router via whatever it was

of course, the string that was in the manual didn't retrieve the pw like is said it would - apparently that info is stored in a different location -

it was like the old days - had to enable echo to see what i was typing and guess what erminal emulator to use

i've wasted enough time on this, i'll probably just get a different router with a RESET button

Call or email tech support. There IS a way to reset it. It's usually two pins you have to short out on a connector with a paper clip.

I'm not happy with my D-Link DI-604. I seem to have random, maddening connection problems that can't be fixed with an ipconfig /renew, only rebooting will fix it. It'll be fine for a bit, then after someone else logs in it can't connect to anything out on the net. Newegg's going to get an RMA request for this POS.

Make sure you aren't using a proxy server when trying to connect yo your router through the web interface, especially if the proxy server is on a different network.
