should I get more ram

Post by marscheese »

I'm running Windows 2000 and i know that you guys say that 256 RAM is pretty much the minimum.. Well, I have 512 DDR, and I'm wondering if adding more RAM would be worth it. I know in Win9x, the OS pretty much maxes out as far as preformance increase at 512. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance...

---edit----
if more RAM would be helpful, how much more would I want to add? (I may also like to mention the fact that I do play Battlefield 1942, and here are my specs as of now:

XP1800+
512 DDR
Winows 2000
Radeon 32 MB (though I am planning to upgrade when the 9700 goes down ;) )
Gigabyte+ mobo

win 2k on a p4 @ 2.13 gaming/surfing/fah 24x7

256 - some noticeable swapping
512 no noticeable swapping on any games that I play
768 because I had one more stick left :) no noticeable difference bewtween 512

though there are some games like bf 1942 which use more than 512

i think in 9x the uesful max is 256 - afaik 2k can handle as mych as you can afford

in games like mafia and bf1942 there is a discernable difference between 512 and 768.

Unfortunately my mobo cant run more than one stick at ~2700 speeds so my options were 512 @ about 2900 in sandra or 768 @ about 2200

The 256 is for sale heh

Up until recently I would have said 512Mb is enough but BF 1942 uses around 600Mb so I just added an extra stick for 1Gb. I hear Mafia and UT2K3 are also big ram hogs.

I think the new low bar is 512Mb now.

Well your buddy is about to have 768meg total by the end of the week (hopefully I'd upgrade that video card before I would even touch your ram ;)

512 really is enough, but with the newer stuff 784+ is becoming more useful.

Mafia uses easily 400MB for itself (on top of your system usage) ...

TRUE TRUE -- Id go for a GIG if you can afford it just for the hell of it, 512 might be enough now.. but from some of the rumors that i have heard of.. if you a big gamer.. you may want to push a gig..

Rumors ie. (Doom 3, Diablo 3{mabey in 10 years}, Tribes 3)

well.....right now from reading some carmack reports, the doom3 should have atleast 512 to enjoy

I dont see a diablo3 in the near future, and even the current diablo2 can be ran comfortablly at 128

Tribes 3..........well I dont see this comming out. Dynamix is gone. I dont see sierra pushing out a new one when they already have their hands full with the t2 online servers. but t2 was able to be ran fine with 256. I think its need was a better vid card than more ram

For gamers, I would say that 768 is the perfect level. I wish I could get back up their soon. My latest 256 stick just bit the dust :(
Gone for good. But never say never
