Seagate, Western Digital to cut warranties too

We all new it was coming... today Western Digital formally announced its 200 GB Caviar WD2000JB, a version of the WD2000BB with, you guessed it, 8 megabytes of buffer.

Joining Maxtor in its segregation of product lines, WD also revealed that their standard BB line will have a 1-year warranty starting October 1st.

Comment: Might be a good time to pick up a hard drive before the 1 year warranty kicks in on Oct. 1

After that date, Caviar SE is the one to get since those drives will still have 3 years warranty.

WD says you can buy an extended warranty up to 3 years. So now something is bought that used to be part of the deal.

that says a lot for the quality of their drives if they have to drop the warranty down to 1 year... pfff....

I dont think so, they jsut are trying to save some $ if you ask me.

Yeah, people are wising up to RMAing their drives and I guess they're feeling a pinch.

So you know, I just bought an 80Mb ATA133 Maxtor 7200 and two 60Gb ATA133 Maxtors and they all have 3 years.

I would suspect that any model line that's currently on the shelves will continue with 3 year, but the next one released will be 1 year.

I'm really not too concerned. You rarely see a drive fail in the first 3 years anyway unless it's a lemon or abused. The party basically ended when Maxtor dropped the lifetime warranty a few years back.
