Presidential Proclamation

Post by jasper »

Got this article from a fellow user :) Patriot Day :) Lots of folks I work with wanted to mark the occasion but not as a celebration and not as a memorial either. This proclamation might be just what we need :)

Sounds like a good idea... People should have been this patriotic before the attacks though...

If someone doesn't want to be patriotic they don't have to be. If someone doesn't want to observe this occurance they don't have to, but leave those who do alone. Furthermore, love for country doesn't mean blind support & obedience for government. Capishe? And finally it is a damn shame some don't appreciate something until its gone or under attack. :s hame

Rogue:

Gee, you are sooo clever. You have certainly earned my respect. Sophmoric humor is a wonderful way to react to a Presidential proclamation honoring the dead.

I am not a much of a fan of our current President, but there is nothing wrong with his proclamation. If the rhetoric about "fighting for our freedom" etc. bothers you, ignore it.

I personally wince whenever I am told that the terrorists want to take away our "freedom." Why? Because it is inaccurate. They don't give a crap about whether I am free or not. They want me dead. They want my children dead. One thing is for certain, we are in a fight with ruthless a**holes who want to make as many of us die as they can as often as they can.

Given the ruthlessness and dedication of those people, maybe, if your not yet developed political sense can handle it, you could consider how wrong your Orwellian view of post 9/11 America is. We didn't have martial law and the resulting suspension of constitutional protections. We could have (Lincoln did it in the civil war). Where are the "relocation camps" for persons of arab origin? The mass arrests?

Nobody is telling me how to vote.

War Tax? Give me the House (H.R. #) or Senate (S#) of the pending "War Tax" bill or the Public Law cite for the one that was passed an I missed. BTW, I have two kids in college and lots of bills and if the gov't wants $100 from me to kill a terrorist I will write out a check right now.

I understand that a healthy sense of persecution and paranoia is essential for the "anarchist/green" community. It bonds you together and gives you a reason to exist. Nonetheless, the rhetoric, which rarely rises above the level seen in your posters, has such little relation to reality that you are forever doomed to stay on the fringe (until you grow up).

Does anybody else think its silly that tomorrow is known as "Patriot" day? If 9/11 is patriot day, what the hell is July 4th now? Sure it is officially a day to celebrate our independace but that day is as well known for showing patriotism. Why do we need another?

Tons of our boys died in Pearl Harbor yet we don't have a special day for them :-/ Seems that if enough attacks happen basically every day will be a "special" day. I dunno, I just don't think it should be a "holiday." Why from now on will I see "Patriot Day" in my calender under September 11th yet NOT see anything relating to pearl harbor on December 7th? Or anything on June 6th for D-Day?

Am I the only one that feels this way?

sbp and Lmandrake said it well. I am getting pretty tired of people who live here and take advantage of all this country has to offer and yet still bash it at every turn. The U.S. might not be perfect by a long shot but if you know someplace that is better what the hell you doing here?

Isn't that what Veterens Day is for ... I've marched in many parades proudly with my Boy scout troop right along side WWII and other war/conflict vets to honor them. We usually ended it with all day flag burning ceremonies. Very touching to be apart of such an honor whith our countries veterens.

rouge sounds like a liberal
the ones that spew patriotism is for the weak minded
rouge doesnt realize that if he were to step into the world and told people he was american they would spit on him.... well except maybe in germany or poland they still have some respect for the greatest nation on earth. the EU hates us for not giving them money
the UN hates us again for not giving them money( and they say we are greedy people)
the arab nations hate us cuz we tolerate any religion
gee lets all join the liberal bandwagon and hate this country as well
im not gonna call you names rouge but i think u should start thinking a little more about why u have such a good life and arent living in a slum in a blind corner of the world

its because you were born in america, our standard of living is over 100 times higher than in other country's, heck i dont like that idiot politicians signed away our rights either
but u dont turn your back on your country cuz our politicians are stupid. they are buerocrats all they care about is their job

I don't. Maybe it should be called something more to your liking. Next quote please.

If 9/11 is patriot day, what the hell is July 4th now?
Its July 4th as usual-Independence Day.

Sure it is officially a day to celebrate our independace but that day is as well known for showing patriotism. Why do we need another?
Tomorrow is a day to reflect on what happened just a year ago. If you wish to partake in such activities, that's fine. If you choose not to, that's fine. Is this too much to understand?

First, its not a holiday. Second, don't you think that for the first few years after December 7th, 1941, people contemplated on what happened on that day? How about D-Day? Over time memories will fade and this day too will be consigned to an article or two in newspapers.

Yeah, he got me. But a good rant purifies the soul.....
rouge sounds like a liberal

Do I?

I am.

Like sbp says, this is just a proclamation and not an official holiday. I don't think that will change since there is already a "Patriots Day" holiday in Massachusetts. As for honoring Pearl Harbor etc., we have both Veterans Day and Memorial Day. This proclamation does not upstage anyone.

I wouldn't have called it Patriot Day myself but the label does not matter....

Yes God Bless the USA and all the good people of the world.
I am Canadian and I hope I speak for my nation when I say we are bloodbrothers on the same North American soil and we stand united against evil and terrorism.
We lost many Canadians that day as well but America lost way too much that day.
God bless the families of the victims.
Here is a web page that has a nice 8 minute slideshow of a tribute to the fallen heros of Sept.11,2001
It takes a bit to load on slow connections but worth the wait....
