I wonder if that's only 2000 Pro?
Right now 2000 Server is the ONLY server version that MS is supporting (they officially killed support for NT earlier this year) and XP Server isn't out yet.
Moreover, XP server will likely not be fully stable (to the satisfaction of IT departments) for at least a year after release (no one trusts a new version of server until the first Service Pack is released).
Lot's of custom business apps out there aren't certified for XP and only just being certified for 2000 (not retail stuff - I'm talking about specialty custom apps for specific business like accountants, insurance companies, etc). IT departments are VERY slow to migrate.

Heck it's hard enough to get people to upgrade from NT 4.0 Server, and frankly I can't blame them.
Most of my clients are just using their server for file sharing. WTF do you need USB support and XP desktop themes for on a server anyway?

Getting any decent sized company who's running old NT environment and dated software to jump to the gun to 2K or XP to them is an unnecessary expense. Even if they do make the switch, it will not likely be a one-step jump, meaning they'll more likely to look at XP than 2K. But if ain't broken, why fix it eh? If IT really wants to make it happen, they've got to convince the guys in the office.
The gov. of Canada is doing exactly that. They're on NT and making the switch to XP this year. 2K isn't even a consideration. They look at it from a support standpoint. The gov also has a some sort of contract where they are forced to upgrade every 2-4yrs I believe it was.
So us fellas who paid a good sum of money of learning W2K Server is a drop in the bucket. Yay? Nay?

IMHO, yes it is too early for M$ to retire Win2k. Windows 2000 Pro is a very good version of Windows, and in some respects, is even better than XP. Plus, its only three years old, and as FlyingPenguin said, there are still a lot of people running NT 4 environments. And besides, NT 4, IMHO is really all you need for a decent small business server...even on newer boxes.
Long live Linux!

Hey..................Bill lost $11 billion last year. He needs the $$!
I love 2k (as much as you can love M$). I won't use XP, 2k is more stable. With the 3rd service pack it is as up to date as XP without the consumer crap on it! True it is overkill for something other than a large business on a network, but it is stable and rarely crashes that I have to restart unlike 98SE and ME where it was a once a day or more thing!
