Maxtor-1 year warranty {updated}

Seen on http://www.storagereview.com Maxtor announced its next generation ATA drives and this new policy.

"An interesting development accompanies this product announcement. Starting October 1st, the warranty on Maxtor's standard ATA drives will be one year in length, down from the three years that Maxtor and many competitors currently offer on their desktop units."

they must have licensed the deathstar tecnology from IBM

There is still Seagate and Western Digital to get.

Wonder if other hard drive makers will follow this example?

IBM would probably reduce their warranty on Deathstars to 90 days if they could! Assuming anyone still has one that works.

LOL, my deathstar still works, and it's one year old as of this month. It's a 60GXP 40 gig.

Glad i won't need a new drive for a few years. My WD SE 120 gig should last me a while and has 3 yrs warranty

Been a long time fan of Maxtor, but if they're only going to warranty it for a year screw 'em (along with Samsung and Fujistsu). If they're only giving you a year, it means they have no faith in them.

I think they'll see retail sales drop a lot.

I like WD though - my new drive is a WD.

Gee, I'm old enough to remember when these guys gave you a lifetime warranty... you'd send in an old drive and since they wouldn't have one to replace it with you'd get a newer larger capacity model

I guess thats a natural progression of steadily dropping prices and shaking out of some manufacturers into few. The quantum/maxtor service has been great and its gotta be costing them lots.

My last hard drive was an IBM GXP 120 and is still working great but my fingers are crossed

Ahhh.... FP, I remember those days as well. I never had to use my warranty, but is was nice to have.

I think WD should take advantage of this instead of following suit. Talk about handing them an ad campain.

Ahhh, Maxtors always sucked anyways. I've had my IBM drive for 3 years now, it's still going fast and strong. I'm picking up a WD1200JB within the next week or so too.

Maxtors been about one of the most stable drives theres ever been. IBM on the other hand... everyone knows how that goes..

Friggin figures. My IBM starts showing signs that it is about to bite the dust so I order up a new Maxtor two weeks later this news comes out.

They'll probably honor the 3yr warranty on all the drives currently out there. Will probably just be the newer ones coming out with oly 1 yr warranty

I just got one of the WD 120GB 7200 RPM SE drives from Comp USA (yay for rebates) for my Xbox. I'm writing all zeros to it now. It is a fast drive but this looks like it won't be done until after I wake up.

Maxtor drives have been good to me in the past though. I dunno, I guess I'll just take whatever performs the best at the time I buy. Then in the event of a blow out after the warranty period note it and take it as an acceptable loss.
