I've got a fong kai case(yeah its junk) it has a fan duct over the hs/f. What do you think about having an alpha pal 8045 fan sucking the heat off and out the through the duct fan. I think it would keep the case cooler and the cpu. Its either that or have the fan in the duct blowing in and the alpha's fan blowing. The only thing about that is it would blow the heat over the hdds and out the front of the case. Here have a look.

CPU fan ducts actually work very well - you won't need a fan on the heatsink if it has good size fins.
You want to have the fan exhaust (blow out the back) NOT intake. If you intake you defeat the design of the case and disrupt air flow.
Air enters the front intake and goes out the back (in this case both the duct and the power supply) - this causes a continous flow across the mobo and heatsink.
The problem will be whether the CPU lines up with the duct on whatever mobo you use. If it doesn't, don't sweat it. Use a standard HSF unit and lose the duct.

I must have a bad tube of AS3. Everything I put it on the temps are at least 10C. higher then they should be. On my soyo with a 1600+ it idled around 36C. with the alpha and Now with 1700+ it at 48C. I had a cheap $7 HS/F on a 1gig P3 with a pad, it was idling at 28C. Now with a retail Amd HS/F off of the 1600+ its at 46C.
The duct barely fit. I could only get the 2 outside screws in it. The duct only covers half of the fan. I try some more as soon as I get some more AS.

I have my fan on the AX-7 blowing onto the heat sink.
Since I don't have a controled room temp here I can't get an accurate result testing each way.
I was going to try both directions myself and see if the system monitor shows a difference in temps.
Also I have a temp sencing variable speed fan and that might run a different speed if reversed. Not that it would matter to me as long as temps are low, but it would not be a true indicator of which way was better.
Might be a good thing for someone to try that has controlled room temps and one speed fan. Just flip it over and watch if the temps go up or down.

Hey two slow,
Just in case you didn't know, but you probably do.
If you think you have some bad Artic Silver 3 check thier website. They have a artical about fake AS3 being sold that does not work well. I actually found a site that was seling it awhile back too!
Also the AS3 website has detailed instructions for using it. They say very little is much better than alot.
It is only supposed to fill in the very fine low spots, not be gooped on in a thick heavy glop.
I've recently had a few people tell me thier temps weren't too good, and they glopped it on. Like about half a tube of it it looked like.
Unfortunatelty most the time when you get that stuff it doesn't seem to have instructions included and most people like me think (thought) it should be a big glop. Luckily I looked at thier site before using it or I would probably have gloped my first use too.

I do read the reviews, and good work guys. Your doing a great job on them

I didn't put to much on. I put a spot in the middle of the cpu about the size of a led. Just the part of the led that you can see. I then spread it with a credit card. It ends up being a thin film, you can almost see through. I then put the HS/F on and take it back off to check the coverage.. Thats what worked the best with the AS2 I had. I've still got it somewhere I just can't find it now.
Btw I got the AS3 from newegg

I have my girlfriend put ice in her mouth (cubes, not the crushed stuff... lasts longer) and gently blow air down and through the cracks in the case, while I watch TV and play on-line games.
First of all... she's always complaining about having something we can do "together"... so this has really helped our relationship. And second, it keeps her from talking... our only real problem.
If things keep going this well... we're going to get married.
