weird hard drive problem...

Post by ji1831 »

ok this computer is a celeron 500mhz asus me-99 mobo 64mb of ram .... anyway the problem is that it had windows 2000 on it and it ran really slowly... and i was going to put windows 98se on it but they wanted windows xp so they bought it and brought it..... so then i formatted and installed xp.. but on the boot up screen it says error loading OS.. so i installed 2000 but then when formatting in the win 2000 format screen it says the drive might be damaged. so i tried 98 but same thing... then i brought my computer and made their HD a slave and installed xp perfectly but then i put it back and it says error loading OS again... whats wrong.... any help will be greatly appreciated. thank you!

Check the jumpers on that drive. It might be set to cable select or something that windows just does not like. Also se if you can isolate the drive on it's own channel.

not sure, but 64 mb of memory sounds a little on the light side for XP - in you rbox it would have had access to however much it needed

I'd be amazed if XP would even run with 64Mb - it would probably spend the whole day caching to the drive.

That's not your problem though.

Make sure the hard drive jumpers are correct. Some drives like WDC have two different jumper settings for Lone Master and Master with Slave.

Download the drive manufacturer's disk utility from their web site and test the drive with it. Maybe the drive's going bad.

Xp on a Celeron 500 with 64m of ram ? not gonna do to good if it even works but hey...If you installed Xp perfectly on your computer then something is interfearing with the Celeron 500 <<--yes obvious-->>
but, try removeing the pci devices, and then like Gand1 states, try its own channel. Other than that? Buy a new PC with XP preinstalled ? :B :B
