Neither Token Ring nor 10/100 Ethernet nor ATM uses all 4 pairs for transceiving. The extra 2 pairs are for noise suppression. The only technology that uses all 4 pairs is Gigabit Ethernet. Token Ring is a lot more forgiving than Ethernet when it comes to cable specs. I would suggest you buy premade cables instead of making them yourself. 90% of the times, network problems are directly related to cable. I used to run a very large network, and the only time I took out the crimper was when I had to run cables from the PBX to the IDF. Voice is a lot more tolerant than data as far as cable goes.
