Computer Project for a good cause

Post by y0shi »

My closest soul-friend and her mother, whom I only see once a year now yet feel extremely close to -- they have a hard time financially. Since the father figure split and refuses to pay child support, I've been handling their upgrades from a P75 8MB to a P150 48MB for the last 4 years. The mom is now starting to demand a lot more from the computer for desktop publishing work and is extremely constrained by CPU. Thanks to AMD, I'm scraping together a relatively inexpensive system from parts I have left over, a Duron 600@900 on a KT133 board with PC133... but I don't have all the parts. These people are not starving, but could benefit from a faster computer more than anyone I know, so much so that I feel criminal with my Athlon XP. I will make pictures of the system and post them if I can get a little help from you guys. This is my first time to ask for charity, and it really goes against my pride, but I just wouldn't feel right bumping them to a Celeron 300 with 2gb hard drive, even tho I am doing this for free to them. These are the parts I could use and will even pay some for if you need a little cash:

17" monitor (doing desktop pub on a 14" is awful!)
4-8x CD-RW (upgrades a 2x ROM)
256mb PC133 (upgrades 48mb EDO)
SB Live OEM / Vortex (upgrades OEM crap snd)
Geforce MX400 or rough equivalent (upgrades cirrus logic 512k)
20gb Hard Drive (upgrades 2gb space problems all the time)
Optical Mouse (anythings better than a 6 yr old bally-mouse)

Ive got a NIC, Duron, Mobo, Case & PSU, Keyboard and that should cover it all. I checked the rules before posting this, and didn't find anything directly against charity or requests for price break posts, but if I'm in error I'll edit accordingly. Thanks so much for listening and may God bless you all!

I have a 15'' monitor if ya want that and cant find a cheap monitor. However i did pick up a 17'' apple monitor at a Local Salvation Army for $4.95.. try out places like that and Goodwill industries. There could be something you can snag cheap. Good luck. LMK on the 15".

just got back from vacation with my parents, so im just seein your post lint -- is the 15" monitor you have a newer model or like a 7 year old dell hehe - if its newerish, id be interested in it to upgrade their 14" piece of junk from 8 years ago or so!

smb, i could still use a graphics card if you have one!

so far ive gotten a 27gb hd for $40, (6) 64mb pc100's for $30, and an MX300 for shipping! thanks for the help guys, i still need a 8x or so cdrw, accessmicro has aopen 24x burners for 40$ new if youre looking to upgrade cheap. i also need a video-card and would like a monitor to complete this system. if you have a complete system for sale i might be interested in picking up or making a second machine so the daughter that goes to michigan university can have a machine as well. thanks again guys!

omg 16x cds! yeah ill take both if you can snag em! :) school compys prolly use onboard video, so i guess there wont be any agp cards lyin about :( if the psu's are 250 watt or better i can use one or two for these machines. 2 floppies would be helpful as well, tho i wouldnt wish a floppy drive on my worst enemy, some people still use them ;-) if you find any hard drives too, that would be great since theyre costing me a good chunk of change!

i only have one good floppy and psu that i could scrounge up, but hopefully that'll help some... i did find 2 decent 16x's, and most of the comps they threw away were becuz of the HD's, lol. so i'll pack'em up, drop me an email or pm on where to ship this schtuff :)

I have a Voodoo 3 8mb that works great that I can donate. If I had anything more, I'd throw it your way... I'll check when I get home.

girter: that would be great man, the only issue i can see is that i think i recall an issue between amd motherboards and the 3dfx cards because 3dfx cards required 5v and all amd boards only push 3.3v to agp or pci. cant recall the specifics, but if youre generous enough to donate the card i would be more than willing to pay shipping and give it a try!

ive gotten hold of a MAC 17" multiple scan 720 display monitor for free locally, and all i need now is the converter to change the mac mon cable to plug into a standard pc video card.
