Problem sharing DSL with a HUB

Post by Phjorg »

Hey guys, long time no see. Anyway, I need some help here. I have a DSL connection for my computer and it works fine. What i want to do is hook up my bros computer too. My provider gives 2 dynami IP's so that's not a prob. I have a hub so i figure that's the easiest way to go.

I hooked up the DSL modem to the HUB's uplink port. And plugged my computer into the hub port 1, in theory I should be able to get a connection like this without having to change any settings, right? However, I got nothing. No ping, nothing. What's going on? Oh, and it was only my computer plugged in..

As for other things, I'm running winXP, my bro has win2k. our dsl is straight plug and play like a cable modem, so no special software is needed. our hub is a simple Aopen 5 port hub. and that's about all I can think of, anything else? Thanks in advance.

- I don't think you can get a second IP through the same modem. You would probably need to buy another modem unless you have a router and not a modem (not with a residential service). Check with your ISP.

- Did you cycle the modem (turn it off and on)? Many cable and DSL modems register the MAC address of the device they're attached to. My cable modem does. If I connect it to a different computer or a router, I have to cycle the modem before it'll recognize it. Also if you cycle the modem you should either run IPCONFIG on your computer to renew the lease, or just reboot it to allow it to renew the lease to the modem.

- Some DSL systems specifically register your account to work with the specific MAC address of your network card (my old DSL service in Miami was like that). Not very common anymore, and if your're using a hub and not a switch I would THINK (not totally sure) that the system would still see you MAC address properly. However you'd have to register the MAC address of your brother's network card. Again, I'd call your ISP and ask about it.

You also have the option of using a DSL router (you can find them as cheap as $80) which as a side-benefit also would eliminate the need for you to use any PPPOE dialer software on your computer (the router would automatically logon for you). You said your DSL was plug and play, but I would be willing to bet you're using PPPOE to logon to it (unless you have a router and not a modem). Almost all DSL systems use it (WinXP has a built-in PPPOE client but Win2K doesn't).

You could also install a 2nd NIC on your computer and use ICS to share your connection with your brother.

my first dsl modem was a ppoe and it was impossible to use more than one puter unless you wanted to play with internet connection sharing - i replaced it with a dsl modem/router and all i had to do was plug it into the uplink port on my switch, set it up per the instructions, change the pcs to search for a dynamic ip and voila - haven't touched it in a year and i can connect/disconnect pcs with no problem - when they boot up they get an ip from the router - i have a dlink dsl500 which isn't at all fancy - i have had pcs run 95, 98 and 2k hooked to this with no problems

post here if it is a ppoe - i have a link somewhere to a good website about that - my porovider quit using it right after i got dsl cause it was a pain

here's a miracle - still in my favorites list

I'm using a Linksys router to connect both my PCs to the internet via my single PPoE DSL connection.

try plugging your pc to the 2nd port on the hub. if i'm not mistaken some hubs/switches disable the first port if the "uplink port" is used.

We might have a winner with this one.

If not, reboot the modem if you haven't already.

If it still doesn't work I'd call the provider to make sure the modem is provisioned to allow two devices to pass through it.

umm i don't think generally modems can assign 2 ip's can they?

all the multi IP solutions are just modem-> router->multiple PCs

hub just shares the link... but in order for you 2nd PC to be able to use the DSL service, it'd have to get an IP address.. that's something the hub is not able to do...

however, you could try using the 1st PC as an IP server.. you'll need 2 NICs in the server box and run ICS (internet connection sharing)
put in a 2nd NIC and then hook that NIC up to a hub and connect to the 2nd PC or just use a crossover cable to connect to the 2nd PC...

chottoED, Yesterday (July 11) I installed a new mobo and proc with a fresh install of XP Pro. I had been using two nics, one for DSL and one for networking my laptop. I also was using ICS so the laptop could connect online. With the new mobo I installed one nic and with a hub I did get two comps connected to the DSL and both got different IPs, plus both comps are networked. For the life of me I could not get it to work that way before. My setup is : Earthstink . . . . errr. . . Earthlink DSL with an Efficient Networks DSL modem, Linksys 5-port workgroup hub, laptop and main comp. The modem is connected to the uplink on the hub and the comps are on ports 1 and 3 of the hub. My hub has five ports and one uplink port.
