PS2 Linux Kit

Post by Schwartz »

I preordered the PS2 Linux kit a long time ago and it arrived today, w00t! I haven't had much time to play with it but it is a full blown Linux box now. Seems to have everything a normal PC Linux box would have except for wads of RAM.

Just one question... ...why? Did ya do it just cause ya wanted something to do or because you wanted a Linux box? Methinks that if all you wanted was a Linux box then you could build one a lot cheaper than this?

But hey, looks/sounds cool either way :)

It cost $200.

I think of it as a functional novelty. I already had a PS2. It really is pretty cool. It makes a nice little backup box. I could make it a router. I can use it as a jump point to use Linux tools when I am on a Windows box. I could check my e-mail on it when I am away. I can run a FTP server on it. I can run a web server on it. I can run Mame on it. I am running an authentication server for routers on it just to see if I could and because I can. There are a million things you can do with it.

Interesting ... you have experience with other current Linux distros? If so, how does it compare since this is based on some rather older packages (Kernel 2.2.1 and KDE 1.1.2)?

You had better spend a few days updating packages to secure the box if its that old.

Other than web browsing nothing I do in Linux uses the GUI. Kinda surprising now that I stop and think about it. I can't really say how it compares. It has Gnome and KDE and they look the same as I remeber them in Redhat 7.1.

The most promising project to keep the kernel up to date looks like this one:
