Nic question?

Post by d_b »

I'm building a comp for my nephew to take to college this fall. He'll be living in a dorm and I have know idea how the college student hooks a comp to the university network. I assume I'll have to put in a nic but not sure. If so what brand and what problems might I encounter? I'll be using either XP or 98se as an OS.

thanks

Pretty much any NIC will do ... it'll be enough to get a cheap 10/100 ethernet card with a REALTEK chip ... I haven't run into any issues using them. The Intel or 3COM cards might be faster by a small margin and a lil less CPU time but not worth the extra money in my eyes. They're preferred in corporate environments for reliability/support/drivers etc, same reason why they use Intel over AMD.
