Hardware Gurus help!

I am trying to setup a P4 Socket 478 rig for my brotherand am hitting a stone wall. I installed the CPU (P4 1.8A)HSF, 512 RDRAM Kingston PC800 on an ASUS P4T-E that I bought here at PCA but it will not post. I have brought it home to swap memory, vid cards with but I get no video to see if it will post. Unfortunately, my rig at home is socket 423 (1.8 ghz) and I cannot swap those to test it. Anybody got any ideas? Only cooky things I can think of is the AGP Slot is shot but I donot have a PCI Vid card to test that theory. Also the memory configuring on the ASUS is weird in being that of the four memory banks and unlike my DFI WTC 370 setup, where the memory is arranged with (2x256mb RDRAM sticks) are in the first pair of banks and the second pair of banks contains the CRIMMS, the ASUS reccommends splitting the sticks with one RDRAM stick and on CRIMM in each bank splitting them.

help guys, I have been messing with this mobo all afternoon.

Dunno about the RIMM's or anything cuase I've never played with a P4 but does the PC speaker beep at all? If not it can be the CPU, motherboard, or RAM. Do the fans spin up at all (basically, is the PC getting any power).

If it does beep than it can possibly be a video-card that isn't seated all the way. I remember one time with my Voodoo3 I thought it was seated as far as it could go but I later found out I really had to push it till I heard it "pop" into place....

No beep at all when it is powered, LED Status on the mobo is a steady green when the PSU is switched on the actual PSU and I hear/see the cpu fan powers up after I hit the power switch but no luck after. Thanks for the quick response but this one has me scratchin my head.

hrm....so she's getting power. This might sound stupid, but have you checked the "clear CMOS" jumper to make sure it's set to "off"? You said you bought it from somebody online so <i>possibly</i> (however unlikely) they cleared the CMOS before shipping the board and forgot to move the jumper back.

Clearing the CMOS on this board requires "shorting out two solder points" on the PCB then
I would be allowed to hold down DEL when booting to get into BIOS. Do you think this would
do the trick?

and you have removed everything..also, try booting it out of the box with minimal things installed....put it on some anti static thing and you have something new to try.

With Asus, the newer mobos require you to remove the battery AND the power plug, then short the CMOS pins. Otherwise may not clear.

Been, trying with only a Vidcard in the AGP and nothing else.

Tried shorting the points with all the ATX power connectors off (all 3) as well as the battery and came up with nothing new. No beeps, no nothing. =( Thanks guys keep the suggestions coming.

Dexvx from Anands suggested the following: "You might have an outdated Bios (no northwood detection). Look for the BIOS chip and see if it says 1005 on it. If not, then go here" and refered the
following FAQ: FAQ

I am running BIOS 1003. I set the jumpers as stated in that FAQ, Downloaded the New BIOS so I could flash it but when I powered it I still got no POST or Error stating wrong CPUID. No beeps, no nothing.

This has turned into a P4 marathon.

And you said you have no PCI card to swap in place of the AGP? (though it doesn't sound like a video-card issue because if it was it would atleast beep) If you think it would help I could send you this old 2meg PCI vid-card to test the rig out.

Greg, I think it's supposed to come to an error screen and continue to floppy seek so it could be flashed. But mine is just staring at me laughing rudley....=/

I'd better look into RMA huh? wasting too much time on this puppy.

HT, thanks for the offer but not necessary, I will be getting one on Saturday from an upgrade I am doing

I will try then. =) If no luck I will look to punt and RMA this puppy or look to get the seller to make good. I say this in this order cause I sat on it for over a month before trying it out as I was so busy from work n' stuff and feel it wouldn't be fair to bitch about it now to him.
