Sorry I pissed him off. There was another thread where I was trying to convince him that ATA100 is only useful versus 66 when the cache comes into the picture. Then he calls me dense. People calling me stuff like dense always sets me off. Kinda like Marty McFly (sp?) in Back to the Future when people call him a chicken.
I have been busy, and not here in a few days. It does seem pretty silly now. Sorry I was an ass.
Though I do feel that 4 years of classes plus 1 year of engineering experience should give me a little more credit than that. Honestly, without my degree, there would be no way I could have my current job. You don't exactly become a firmware designer straight out of high school. Hell, you don't become a firmware designer coming out of a tech school.
And yes, both degrees are hanging near my computer. My wife's are on the other wall. Am I proud of them? Damn skippy I am proud. If anyone thinks their worthless, then don't go to school.
PC Mark 2002 hd score differences?
I never said they were worthless... Pisses me off when people gotta throw their degree's around like it makes them any smart.er Some cases yeah i'm sure it does. I've got a 2 year degree in Telecommunications with all sorts of certifications but i don't go tossing that around. I plan on going back to college this fall and finishing up a degree in CAD Engineering. Ain't no telcom jobs in my area and i'm done tired of machinist work... Even though i can make some cool shit! Makes doing case mods hella nice too... hehehe
all that formal education and he still hits the submit button TWICE ! ( HAHA , double post ! ) . Sorry poopster, couldn't resist.

just bustin'......
if we can't poke fun at ourselves around here things would be awfully boring.
OK, now that we've got all the frivolity out of the way, what gives with this benchmark anyway? I mean you've got P4's smoking the XP+'s by a wide margin in the CPU test, which by any other benchmark, they are relatively close when at their optimum speeds ( XP+ @ 1.7 GHz, P4 @ 2.2 GHz). Then you've got IDE RAID 0 configs whooping up on SCSI HDDs that have seek times that are AT LEAST twice as fast as the fastest single IDE HDD's available !!
Are P4's really that much faster than an XP+? ( HAHA, you can dream at least !
)
Are IDE RAID 0 configs a little known secret weapon as the ultimate storage solution? ( Hey, I can dream too !! Can't I ??
)
Bottom line = I think this thing ( PCmark2k ) is a gimmicky, unscientific, technically flawed "benchmark" ( and I use the term loosely) that should only be used to compare changes in settings or tweaks done to your own rig. I'm not even sure it's any good for that ! I'll have to admit that I've only run it the one time.
There used to be a pretty decent web based benchmark called Wintune that was a whole helluva lot better but that got 86'd when http://www.winmag.com bit the dust. I used to have fun testing overclocking results with that.

Well since i've ran the tests on both an XP platform and a P4 platform and will run them again as soon as my KR7A shows up... Shit ya give me hell Vid
lol i'm tired of the text corruption ok! As far as the mem score goes i think the reason why the P4 smokes the XP is cause its bus is quad pumped while the XP is only dual pumped... Meaning the XP's is 266 while the P4 at 400 pr 533 or in my case with it at 150 its pumpin' 600 on the FSB. I think that is the only reason why it beats it in mem. As far as the CPU goes... I think you would find a 1.6 gig XP and a 1.6a P4 are gonna have a close CPU score... It seems that PCMark goes off of Mhz more than it does performance which is gay if it does that... I don't see it as a highly reliable benchmark at all.
Back to the origonal observation
I've since ran the program many times after bios changes and the high scores on the quantum hd machine have gone back to about 1xxx or so with the odd one up to 1900ish. It seems to be an anomaly on this one box. My other box is steady around 1100 to 1200(thanks for that maxtor Greg) and other scores seems consistent.
The program is just meant to do a few everyday tasks in these three categories and give a basis of comparison between machines and settings which it does fine for me. It allows me to see if a setting change I've made has an impact or to tell me when I screwed up or where a weakness is. There 3dmark program takes care of the the video end of the testing.

But my problem with PCMark is that you may change some settings which appear to increase performance. But since PCMark seems to be highly cache-dependant (among other things), these changes in settings might actually decrease your actual performance. I feel that PCMark in no way represents the real world. Though an increase in PCMark equaling a decrease in real performance is very unlikely, it seems to be possible. PCMark is just way outta whack. Try wintune or sandra instead. Drivespeed is another good one (as far as I can remember).The program is just meant to do a few everyday tasks in these three categories and give a basis of comparison between machines and settings which it does fine for me.
