...should I be more than slightly irritated when the bundled CD-R discs say "For drives up to 16x speed? :rolleyes:

I've found if its a CDR of quality they will burn at faster speeds... I had a stack of Maxel 12x's that i burned on my 24x Lite On just fine... They should work with no problems...
