hard drive temperature question

what is the ideal or max temperature a 7200 hdd can be at? and some temp moniter software?

It's not something too many people give much thought to. Some fancier high end drives have temp sensors in them and there's a utility that can read them (search for a previous post about that here).

As long as you have adequate ventilation in the case, temperature isn't much of an issue for the hard drive, although I hear some of the high-end 15K drives get very hot and can use some extra cooling.

ok, wondered because it is warmer to touch than my 5400rpm drive. i didnt want it to fry.

What HDD is the 7200?
Some 7200 drives should get active cooling and many cases have a fan in front of the HDD cage for that.
The difference between the drive's highest operating temperature and the room's ambient temperature can be between 13C (Samsung V30, 5400 IDE) and almost 37C (IBM 36Z15, 15K SCSI drive) according to http://www.storagereview.com .

I posted this a few weeks ago. There is a free hard drive temperature utility that works by reading the temperature if you have SMART enabled in your bios.

i did find the specs it says the max is 60 C. sounds hot to me. the program reads 38-42 C @ 75-80 F room temp. i guess that is well within specs? the 7200 rpm is the boot drive. also says 600,000 hrs mtbf
