I was trying to use my old burner in my "new" computer, but after I put it in, it would hang during the boot process. Sometimes I'd get to the Win98 Splash screen, sometimes not.

Some controllers are very fussy about CD drives - they would prefer to see a CD only as a slave and not as a master.
Also check your hard drive. Western Digital and some other brands have a different jumper for single master and master with slave. If you have the drive jumpered for single master and connect the CD as the slave it may not detect either of them.

You need the boot drive on IDE #1...
loopy26:
You should have the CD-ROM and CDRW on IDE #2, and your boot drive on IDE #1. Also, I recommend that the CDRW be made a master, and the CD-ROM be made the slave. Then double check them in device manger to ensure that DMA is enabled.*&

Thanks guys,
BTW, BigAl, I meant IDE1 as opposed to IDE0, sorry bout that!
I'll try looking at it again. It was working fine with the WD HD on IDE0 alone,
and the CD on IDE1 as master. Then I tried putting on the burner onto IDE1 as
the slave. I also noticed that I used the ata100 cable that came with the mobo.
Any chance that using an ata100 on an older (ata66, maybe 33???) burner could
cause problems?
Thanks again!

CDRW should be made the master...
loopy26: Have you made the CDRW a master, and the CD-ROM a slave? The Ultra ATA/100 cable is backwards compatible with the Ultra ATA/66 and Ultra ATA/33 specifications. Maybe you have a bad cable; try swapping it out with a known good cable. :kookoo
