are LCD monitors ready for gaming yet?

i want/need a LCD monitor for my desktop...to replace the 21" beast i'm using (just tooo big on the desktop!!!)....but have always heard that LCD's suck for gaming. are only the super-expensive ones able to refresh fast enough for adequate gaming? any recommendations? i'd like at least a 17"...but probably a 19-20" if possible.

Wife had a 17" monitor. I replaced it with a ViewSonic Flat Pannel 15" viewable (Purchased here at the BBS). I took it to a LAN party because I didnt want to carry my 19". Holly cow was I amazed at the abiltiy to game. Personally I thought it was AWESOME.
The technology IS here for gaming on a Flat Pannel. If only I can afford a bigger one I would replace my 19".

To answer your question: YES. In my opinion and I do nothing but game.
But Im sure it would matter on the model you purchased (as with anything else)

From what I've heard, LCDs (even high-end) are still not ready for fast action or FPS games. Strategy or other slow paced games are fine, but ghosting occurs when you have things moving around on your screen very fast. Try Tom's Hardware for a recent roundup of LCDs.

maybe so... but I didnt see a problem with my wifes.
I played Quake III and RTCW and it was great.
I was at 1024 on a 1.33 TBird.
My only personal experience is this 15", however there were 3 LCDs at my last LAN Party which tells me a few things.
- They are getting to be more affordable
- They are reaching the quality of Gaming

Not sure if it would be worth the quality for everyday use (sure works for a LAN) but I think you would have to determine the importance of desk space.
I would find a friend that owns one and give it a spin to see if you like it before droping that much $ dwon on one, if that is an option for you.

Depends on the LCD. You need to check the pixel-response rate for the models you are considering. The faster they can respond the less chance of ghosting you'll have. Although this info is hard to find from what I have been seeing, you'll have to search for it. I have the KDS RAD-5 and it has a 25ms response time and I have been pleased with it.

The difference atleast in my opinion is night and day, I would highly recommend the LCD over a CRT anyday, but that depends on the brand/quality of the LCD you choose and video card powering it.

I bought the Samsung SyncMaster 760Vtft, and simply love it.

I play CS, Delta Force 3, Q3, UT and am just astonished every day at the picture clarity.

You'll be glad once you've made the switch + I actually have some room on my desk

Well, after some thought I decided to replace the CRT I use on my main system. I just ordered a Viewsonic VG191b 19" LCD. I got it for $950. It hurts but feels good at the same time if you know what I mean.

I really wanted a LCD that can do 1600x1200 but it looks like you're talking well over $2,200 for something like that. This looks like the perfect monitor to mate with a GF4 and the DVI output for some gaming at 1280x1024. I did quite a bit of research and unfortunately there isn't a whole lot out there. I found it almost impossible to find the response time of most LCDs. Viewsonic was good enough to list the response time in the specs for this LCD. It is 25ms which is really good from everything I have read. I can only assume that most compaines don't list this because they probably suck. I'll let you guys know how it is after I get it and play with it for a bit. My only worry is dead pixels, we shall see.

I won't replace my 21" CRT anytime soon but I would consider a LCD monitor for LAN situations.

Also don't forget that LCDs look best only at their native resolution. It'll look fuzzier when you use lower resolutions than the native one.

DaMaN...LOL I was waiting formore people to talk about it first. Yes like others have said. It all depends on basicaly how much you are willing to spend. My HP 15" fp is awsome for gaming, while my samsung fp 15" ant the greatest. Then the 17" Viewsonic is acceptable but not crt quality.

All or most the cheaperr ones are not worth there weight even in Normal stuff let alone gaming.

Come on over and decide for your self.
