Networking help....
Ok i got a Linksys BEFRS41 router today... Hook it up its talkin' away with my cable modem...... My computer connects just fine via dhcp and i have net connection.... The womans computer on the other hand is being a bigger bitch than she is at the moment... I've tried 3 different NIC's done everything i can think of to get this SOB to connect to the router to get an IP and it won't
:ping do it... Anyone got any idea's.... I had these computers hooked up via ICS before... I had 2 nics in my computer and she got her connection this way... Now for some reason i'm thinking this is why i can't get DHCP to work between her computer and the router... ITs flat got me pissed and of course she's pissed at me cause her beloved computer don't have net connection...

Might you have ZoneAlarm or other firewall protection that needs to allow that PCs IP address in security settings? Does the router have software or specific instrutions how to configure each PCs IP address? Mine does and until that's done, it won't work. Does the router have a FAQ at their website which might detail this? If Win2K or XP, is the user info set?
Just a few ideas

Hey horace i dont think its the firewall to tell you predator i am currently having a problem with computer connecting to router. This is the tricky part my computer is dual boot i have win2k and win98. Everything was working fine until yesterday. I get net connection on win2k but nothing on win98 it does not even connect to the domain it says theres none but theres is no network connection and no net connection. i did noticed on my ip address it was not part of the lan so the only solution i would see is to assign the computer a static ip and force it to use that ip.
When i typed in winipcfg i get this ip address 169.128.1.? but my lan is suppose to use ip address from 192.168.1.1 and so on. when i tried renew it it does not let me so my guess its not receiveing the ip from dhcp. look at your ip address from the computer that does get connection and the your wifes the first the number should follow same path for example one my computer may have192.168.1.25 and another computer has 192.168.1.35
May add that linksys routers are nice
in order to fix your problem you need to assign a static ip to your wife's computer after that you should have no trouble. You will need to type in the ip address subnet mask Gateway dns server in order to get your wifes computer to get net connection hope this helps if you need more details of how i fixed this problem on my computer throw me an email at wizardfox69@hotmail.com

The comp is linked to the router... All the lights are on it just isn't gettin' the info from DHCP server in the router.... The funky IP address you are seeing fear is one the one for the nic itself that the factory sets it with... All 3 nics i put in showed 3 different ip address and told me it couldn't release the info cause it had been manually set... I was like BS cause i never set it all was set to auto detect. I took and hooked her back up to my 2nd nic and poof! Its got connection again... Im thinkin' it has something to do with ICS...

Predator, is her computer recieving a lease?
If so, can you ping the router or your computer?
Maybe the cable's no good - all it takes is a bad crimp. I've often seen a network cable work okay until someone moves one end an loosens a bad crimp. You can have a link light and still have a bad cable.
As Fearfox suggested, you can try setting the IP, gateway, and DNS manually and see what happens.

I won't obtain a lease from the router... I think i have it figured out... When you use ICS the comp with ICS is pretty much a DHCP server for the other comps... I forgot to disable that on the nic before i hooked it up to the router... i think her computer was confused as to what one to obtain a lease from.... Its just a thought i haven't actually tried to do anyting to it yet not real worried... I'm fixin' to install a new mobo into her comp and have to reload anyways.
