A problem with my computer that befuddles me

Post by Solo2 »

Having built countless computers for buddies, I have some ability on troubleshooting however this problem has been plaguing me ever since my upgrade to WinXP. My computer is:

A7V 1008bios
512 PC133 Crucial ram
SB Live Value
Geforce 1 DDR

I'm having a constant problem of my whole computer freezing for about 10 seconds then rebooting itself. The odd thing is this ONLY happens when i'm using IE( I have version 6 installed ). When I play games ( CS1.3, DAOC ) my computer runs flawlessly. My computer is also on basically 24/7 and never freezes except when I am using IE. At first it was a minor annoyance, but trying to do work and having my computer reset when it feels like it is extremely fustrating. I've installed the latest 4 in 1s and Nvidia official drivers. I've checked out IRQs and made sure my SB Live is not sharing at all. I'm out of ideas and i'd appreciate any suggestions.

I'd have to agree with the link DaMan posted. Nothing shows up when searching
the parameters you provided... With Microsoft OS's I always remove the old one and
install fresh. Have done so on my own and all customers for 10 years. Upgrading
a Microsoft OS is usually more trouble than it's worth.
I know it sucks, but if the problem is still there once you have installed a New OS then
it's a driver ( or least likely a hardware ) conflict.

One thought: you dont' have to wipe the hard drive to do this. With W9x you could
boot to a diskette and deltree the Windows directory and the system files in the root
of C: ** IF ** the data on this drive is important you could install the OS to a second
drive, copy the data over ( you need to boot an NTFS OS to access info on an NTFS
partition if that's what you are using ) then wipe the original HD and copy the data back.

I'm sorry I couldn't be more help, but upgrading Microsoft OS's ... it's like Packard Bell
computers: They work perfectly for many people but never did so for me. :(

When a computer reboots by itself it's almost always due to an IRQ problem, either an IRQ conflict or a PCI IRQ channel sharing problem. More details here: http://soldcentralfl.com/quakecoop/glfaq5.htm#5_9

In your case I believe the problem is with the NIC (I assume you have broadband - if not, the problem is with your PCI modem). I've seen this happen countless times. Eveything will SEEM to work okay until some threshhold data transfer rate is exceeded by the NIC which, due to the IRQ issue, causes a reboot or a lockup.

The other likely culprit is the SBLive which is EXCEEDINGLY prone to PCI IRQ channel sharing problems.

I recommend you pull ALL your PCI cards except the NIC (make a note of what slot each card was in first). Try to recreate the situation that causes it to reboot. If it reboots, move the NIC to another slot and try again.

Once you get it to behave, put the SBLive back in it's original slot (if it's free) and see if it reboots. If it does, move it to another slot until it behaves.

Do this with each remaining PCI card until they're all back in.

Hope this helps...

sadly I think you are right. Fixing that problem will take me a lot of time I dont have. That was one of my hunches but the IRQ list at bootup shows the SB Live alone on its own irq. An interesting thing is that everytime the computer reboots itself, XP spits out a "System has just crashed, would you like to send a error msg" stating that it had something to do with Nvidia drivers.

edit: forgot to say, it definitely could be my NIC, sitting on fat dual OC3s here.

edit: Woohoo. I moved the SB Live into my 3rd PCI slot so now it uses the same IRQ as my onboard Promise ATA100 controller which I dont use. Everything is noticabily more stable. Thanks for the help :)
